I just received this neck knife from Richard J yesterday. As expected it is ridiculously sharp and made from his fantastic 1075. If you don't think 1075 can be compared to some of today's super steels, you haven't tried one of Richard's blades. I don't know what kind of magic he uses to go with his sharpening and heat treating skills but he's doing something right and I'm betting that it ain't natural.:D

This will be a perfect companion for the Skinner that he made me a couple of years ago.

If you have one or more of Richards blades, feel free to post pics here. I'd love to see the ones I've missed out on.

He showed me his skills when I went to visit him and see how he works. Some of the knives he showed me that he had made were extremely nice. I would like to get one from him sometime when I'm due for another knife!

He just got a bunch of Wharncliffe neckers cut out and will be putting the edges on soon. These will be SWEET!

they will have to wait till i get healed back up. i have some other projects i hope i can get finished before i go back in the hospital.

Richard J., we have heard various posts that you have been "ill" or "injured." Whatever the case, your reputation is outstanding and we hope for your early recovery. And, of course, some of us are waiting patiently until you are well so we can send you our blades.
God bless.

That necker looks amazing Protourist!
Here are a couple of Pitbulls that Richard gave my son and I as gifts when we visited him.
The top is 1075, and the smaller is a composite blade. Can't recall what the body is, but the edge is M4. About 3/16 from the edge you can see the seam from the laser weld.

Hopefully soon I will have time to make handle scales and sheaths for them.

Here is the Kii.
This one passed thru quite a few hands as part of a pass around. I took it to work and let the guys hack up a 4 x 4 piece of oak we found.
Still (beyond) shaving sharp after over 100 hits and not a mark on the blade. I agree, definitely something else besides the grind and the heat treat with this 1075.

Richard is far too tough to let a little thing like surgery get him down. We'll all keep him in our prayers, knowing all the while that he's gonna be back better than ever very soon.

KII was being tested by Unit when I visited Richard. One day I really need to try it out for myself.

Richard, I hope all goes well with your reconstruction this week. Please keep us posted.

Hello Richard!

I've been trying to reach you via Email and hadn't heard back from you and I have been concerned. I hope you are feeling OK and that all goes well with your situation. Please Email me when you feel up to it Richard.

Regards,

Yeah, I saw the video and was very impressed. I've done some testing as well.
I plan on visiting Richard again soon so I will be sure he has it.
The Busse shop is about 25 minutes down the road and I am trying to make time to show it off to those guys. Richard, Gus, and I did a side by side chop test and my phone was dead so I couldn't take video, but it held it's own.
I also showed it off to the guys from Blind Horse Knives, they were amazed that a blade with such high rockwell hardness wasn't chipped out.

Sounds great. If you ever manage to chip one of his knives, it will not be on any material normally cut by a knife. I'd bet on that.

i went to have the colonoscopy and it showed that i have colitis so its going to be a while before i get put back together. my dr. hopes in october at the earliest. she said if she put me together now, i would just come back apart.

I hate hearing that you need to suffer with it longer. Heal well my friend.

As for your knifemaking and knife sharpening goes, if you continue making knives like the ones I have, you are going to put yourself out of the sharpening business. I can't get them dull!!!

thanks for the wellwishes. i hope the specialist can find what is causing this.

mack, i told myself the last year i hunted (1988) that i was going to make a knife one of these days you could clean a bunch of rabbits with and not have to go through every blade you had to do it.

Hey Richard, I'm really bummed to hear about your health problems. You just take it easy and heal up soon.

Setbacks are a bummer, but it sounds like you are in good hands with your doctor. Keep going with the knives, it will give you the strength for your recovery.

You did it right!
If I needed one knife for a backpacking trip that I knew would stay sharp it would be one of yours. No question.
