Knives by Richard J. The Definition of Scary Sharp

I need to get some good pictures while I have Richard's K2 to play with. For now this is all I have because I have too much fun while cutting with them to think of taking pictures.:o

Glad to hear that it made it to you safe and sound and you get to use it.
That's a nice looking family of knives right there.

I'm going to have a really hard time letting go of it. I like it. I like it a lot.
Thanks for getting it to me.

mack, hang onto it for a while and have some fun with it. it will be at least april or may before i want to get it back. i have a few people that i want to send it to on its way back to me but there is plenty of time.

Thanks Richard. I will get lot of use out of it. I'm going to try to dull it if I can.

Just cut up some kevlar gloves, that's how Richard dulls it!

I almost forgot about that. It's pretty amazing when he sharpens them up and cuts up a kevlar glove to test it.

the kevlar kind of shines up the edge but it will still cut you. all it takes to bring the edge back is a pass on the slotted wheel.

So far I haven't been able to dull them enough for them to need more than a quick stropping on my jeans.

Richard just sent me the pic of his latest M4 necker. I like this. I like it a lot. I think I will still prefer his 1075 but M4 is sure worth a try.

mack, how wide and long is the skinner i made for you? i never did measure it.
3 1/2 inches wide and 5 1/2 inches long. 3 1/2 inch long handle. Did I ever mention that this thing is SHARP?

today i went to a buddys down the street to see the rack from the deer his son shot. i fixed him up with one of the skinners that i had ground when you were here. all it needed was heat treated and neoprene slabs stuck on. i did the ht one night at charlies and the next day i put on the neoprene. this weekend cjpgeyer is coming over to make the sheath for him. he does good work.

i looked at his knife and except for a few tiny burred spots where he was splitting the ribcage and hitting bone, it was still shaving sharp. all it will need is a few passes on the slotted wheel to get rid of the 2 spots and it will be ready for the next one he gets.

i was amazed that he was able to get through the ribcage. every time i tried it i had trouble getting the blade to cut up the middle. i was using an uncle henry model 9885 uh. i guess if i had one of the knives i make now, i would have had no problem splitting the ribcage.

i have been meaning to get a picture of the skinner i made my buddy rick back in 94. so far he's up to 15 deer and it still shaves. by now he might be up to 20 deer if everybody in the family lucked out and shot a deer.

Richard is working on these right now. 1/8" M4 with a hollow/convex grind in either left or right hand. I can't wait to get mine. I think if he makes more of these, they will be a hit. What say you?

3 new ones... notice the lefty..jpg

last night after we talked i was checking out the necker i told you about and then bethann called. while i was talking to her i decided i had to see what it would be like to do a straight razor grind on one of the m 4 neckers. here is what i ended up with. .008 at the edge but i think it is thinner as the edge is taken back.

i am going to try to clean up the finish a little more but being thin already, i would hate to wrinkle the blade by going thinner and turning it into foil.

I can't wait to try this out. Oh yeah!

Thread bump!
Looking for an update on the K2. Is it still shaving or does it need touched up?
