Nice gator. I oversaw a job in the cooling lake at FP&L's plant in Parrish, FL. Divers did ok with 5-6 foot gators. Bigger than that and they were out of the water until we knew the gator had moved on or was trapped.
US 42, Tamiami trail was my favorite ride from Naples to Krome Avenue. I would stop at just about every road side park and take it in. I always had my G30 on me.

In Florida, anything bigger than a puddle has a gator in it.

I'll take the Rockies and the grizzlies, thank you very much. ;)

I can be a bit slow sometimes, sorry about that, Chief.

Been chuckling all day thinking about what would have happened if OSHA had showed up when the divers were shooing the gators away while they were working. Somehow that's funny to me.

These are the tantos that have stuck around in my collection. I've also got a CQC-7 to reobtain, and any other cool tanto that I come across along the way. But as you can see, I love the classic American style. Flat, irresponsibly deep hollow and a nice flat tip at that perfect Voyager angle. Slim/reasonable stock thickness. Damn it the Recon 1 really is the best full sized tanto EDC. The new GSM 15% less hateful version is a lot easier to carry and use everyday too. I still have a big spot in my heart for ol' shreddy pants, but I apprecaite the new guy. I've aged a lot in that time too, Recon. Voyager is always my budget rec to anyone who wants a 4" blade and doesn't mind a thick one in their pocket. I've had many imaginary "you can only grab one folder on the way to the fallout shelter!" debates, and it's surprising how many times the humble Voyager won out over knives that cost many times the price. It's just a bulbous beast to carry in your pocket to your job in the old world. Voyager Slim would be a top seller. Change nothing but the thickness of the plastic. Stick if you're reading this...

Morning. After yesterday's day at the range, my rifles will get a break for a bit ....

Some switcheroo of stocks and scopes: the standard now carries the longer Burris zoom scope, the Tanker the shorter and fixed Leupold:

Both have USGI stocks.

M1a/M14 trivia: a new M1a today comes with either wood or (quite soft) polymer stock. When the M14 replaced the M1 Garand, it first had a wood stock, later it came in fiber glass, for better water resistance in Vietnam. Today's polymer stocks are more flexible than the original fiber glass ones and USGI stocks can still be bought.

The two above are such stocks from the 60s; you can tell from the hole in the fancy wood stock on the right, under the receiver/irons (where the M14 auto switch was). That hole was filled in the gray stock on the left (JB Weld) and the stock was repainted; then, I replaced the steel butt plate with a rubber pad and added bipod mount and scope/cheek riser; finally, I put a layer of Kevlar in the front under the barrel, for additional stiffness.

If you like to modify knives, you should try an M1a :)
