Knives of the Blade Show - 2009

Hi Shawn,

I use an overhead diffuser with strobes. I use an assortment of mirrors (the smoke is Photoshop ;)) There are many versions that do a similar job, and we discussed them at length in this thread: $75 'No Frills' home studio setup

My website shows a relatively current photo of my setup.

What's a tripod? I wouldn't know one. Really. ;)

where can i find more info on that wallet folder by john kubasek?

as always, amazing pictures, thank you for taking the time to post them.

Coop. Is there a software package like ACDSee that works on a Mac and doesn't cost as much as my first car?:D

Gus Cecchini has been knocking them out of the ballpark since he burst into the scene a couple of years ago. I had the pleasure of shaking his hand (with his crushing grip). He is all about hand control.

This one is VERY deceptive. Watch how the clip disappears when it's open. That's the end of the lockface way out there.

Couldn't agree more, Coop. Gus does amazing stuff with his knives!

He had an assisted release proto at the show that was killer! He's designed one of the coolest lock release.

As always. . . .fantastic pics!

Absolutely stunning collection of knives, and superbly photographed as well.

I'm almost afraid to go to Blade, I'll end up mortgaging the house! :)

thats easy to do. i only took my " fun money " to blade this year. spent $ 700 anyways. could've spent $ 7000!!!! real easy. see ya in 2010 !!!!!!:D paul

Our favorite Whiz Kid is as deserving of the applause as he is talented. I am referring to none other than Kyle Royer. Here's the WIP subhilt fighter we watched him build.

John Cohea is a most generous man. His March of Dimes benefits are helping many. Here's what he does when he simply wants to have FUN!
orig.jpg

Doug Campbell is only an apprentice smith from Montana. I predict a solid future.
orig.jpg

Matt Gregory also holds no titles... yet. He's from northern NY.

Then traveling all the way west across to North Pole, Alaska (true!), I submit to you, Bob Hook's (5) passing Journeysmith knives

Mardi Meshejian is a non-conformist by every measure. I wouldn't change a thing. He's so far out of the box he's lost his way back. ;)

(I have another of Mardi's I am saving for another theme)

Lastly, is the knife Kevin Jones has already shown, but in a different pose. One of Rodrigo Sfreddo's (6) MS test knives.

Butch Ball's clients likes them ornate and colorful. He delivers:

The same must be said about Nova Scotia's Donald Bell. This was so ladylike and elegant (that's blacklip pearl behind the skeletonized gold frame), that I chose a suitably royal and ladylike pink backdrop. We all agreed.
orig.jpg

Colorful, but more purposeful is Walter Brend's 30th Anniversary subhilt.
orig.jpg

Walter has a client who does deep-sea fishing. Here's his version of a LARGE working filet knife for him:
orig.jpg

Joe Mandt is just as purposeful with his traditional clip-point fitted to a military sheath. I'd want this on me when the going gets tough.
orig.jpg

Terry L. Vandeventer pulled this one off his belt to have it shot. He likes to carry in style.
orig.jpg

He also likes to build them fancy. Mastersmith quality in spades!
orig.jpg

Johnny Stout and Jim Small have teamed up often. Each time they do, it's a knife that speaks volumes of the state of our art. You will agree:

Old soldiers never die. That is most certainly the case of this 20-yr-old fighter from Claude Montjoy bought by an astute collector.

Hi Joe,

How about ACDSee for Mac for FREE! It's a beta just released (after we badgered them for years.) Good till next year. Try it.

To the rest of you guys for your appreciations. Thanks. As Mike Snody would say: That some REAL talk!

Excellent pictures Jim,very beautiful work. I would like to add that my abalone knife is a spine release automatic with a liner lock.Keep up the great work.

What an ongoing treat.

I have to say I absolutley fell in love with John Cohea's hawk. Got to handle it for quite a while in the pit and it was hard to give it back.

Glad that Kyle got that subhilt photographed. It was one of my favourite damascus pieces of the whole show.

Tha Gregory amboyna bowie will be heading north just as soon as Matt gets done polishing the handle for the thousandth time. :p

I now realize I completely missed Terry Vanderventner's table and feel like slamming my head into a wall.

Now that's just plain mean...

...true, but mean.;)

I'm proud to have a knife in this thread, but also humbled by so much of the work displayed here.

Some very nice knives yet again. Finally we can see Kyle's subhilt in a proper manner:thumbup:. John's spike hawk is very cool too. The best of this bunch for me is Terry's Bowie with the seashell guard and I dont even like wood;):thumbup:

Coop, why are you holding out on me...show me the money ...... I mean the Rybar;)

Marcel

Roger,

My wife Ginger and I sat right across from you at the CKCA banquet and I admired that bowie you were showing around. Too many names, faces, knives (Well, never too many of those:thumbup:), tables for one long weekend. Stop banging your head. I didn't have a table at Blade. I came to visit, buy stag & ivory, judge prospective journeymen, and show off a couple knives in the pit.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments. Those two blades are destined for the ABS Expo in San Antonio. Even the stag personal carry (which I haven't had a chance to carry yet:rolleyes:) if I feel I need one more to found out my table

Cheers,

TV

Marcel, I only finished the image today. It's going in a post called 'The REALLY hard ones'. I have a number of knives that will fill that post. ;)

Maybe later. I need a few more views and responses before I add again. :D

Coop

Hi Terry - yes, I remember you and your wife from the dinner - I just thought I'd missed out on your table. Glad to hear I didn't, but still sorry I didn't get to see those beauties in person. Thanks for you comment on my knife - much appreciated.
