Knives of the Blade Show 2012 • Art, Classics, and Surprises

Hey Coop

Thanks for the work on the knives, fantastic as usual. And an big thanks for the posting, it is a bunch of extra work you do for everyone and it is appreciated. I always miss so much at the show it is great to have a chance to see it again from home!

It was great seeing you Shawn :)

This is such a treat! I carried many of the knives to and/or from the makers' tables so Coop could shoot them. I watched the images pop up on the monitor and watched Coop futz with the knives and tweak the lighting. All those beautiful, interesting knives gave us lots to talk shop about. Seeing the images of those knives finished and hanging in this thread is thrilling. The bold presence of every knife against its background, exceptional detail throughout and smart use of highlights combine to let a viewer actually 'experience' the knife instead of simply looking at a knife picture. It's a wonderful kind of magic through which Coop showcases each knifemaker's talents for the world to see.

^^^ Thanks Buddy! Without YOUR help I could not have spent the necessary time getting the knives to show in their full glory.

"...combine to let a viewer actually 'experience' the knife instead of simply looking at a knife picture."

What a compliment! And a testimony to what ALL good photographers have as a goal. Yourself included. Great sentence, worth remembering.

OK, I'm ready to finish this chapter. Drumroll....

Donald Bell sold these two beauties to mother/daughter pair of collectors. So very good.

You KNOW I love Ron Best's work. Owned by a prominent collector.

Bruce Bump and Steve Janik combined on this sleek fighter.

From the province of Quebec, comes forth the work of Alain Desaulniers. High quality tributes.

An exemplary Fisk. Is there any other kind?

Bob Loveless: A classic of classics. The REAL deal.

If you want a knife about Rock & Roll, you may have a couple of choices: Joe Olson would be your first.
orig.jpg

Tom Overeynder/Brian Hochstrat: Perfection is impossible. But you CAN come close. Here's a sublime example. Note the faux 'shadows' on the engraving.

Simple beauty, executed cleanly. I own one of John Parks' knives because of this aspect.

Scott Sawby: Simple shape, complex lock.

Lance Abernathy: A powerful pair.

Old Skool Ken Steigerwalt. Always desirable.

Joe and Lori Szilaski are a fixture at better shows. Here's his interpretation of a vintage German hunting axe.

Mace Vitale's knife wants to jump off the screen into my hand.

It's no surprise why John Young has become so popular. Here's three great examples.

I will close with three knives which are breathtakingly beautiful. I know you will agree.

As presentation daggers go, this has it all. Bertie Rietveld is SUCH a great person to chat with as well. So smart. That's his renowned 'dragonskin' damascus.

Samuel Lurquin had his friend Frederic showing this beauty and sheath to anyone who would care. I did. I even got a chance to wear the shoulder harness tactical sheath. MAJOR score!

David Mirabile combined a traditional wrap with a modern classic and had all the judges in awe. As are we.

(That's a Paul Long sheath complimenting it, too.)

Thanks for viewing!

Coop,

I think that you mentioned that you were so busy taking photographs that you didn't have a chance to actually go into the Show.

No need!! The Show came to you!! There are many, many knives in this thread that I missed seeing.

Super job.

my hello and my thoughts to all my friends that i meet in the blade show ...

Coop

The pics are not showing my friend and I'm dying to see what you did with David Mirabile's piece :)

Re: Images not showing: I can't help you. I've sent a note to Fototime asking why, but they are displaying properly here. Often there is a server midway between them and you that isn't relaying them to everyone.

Frustrating. I will report back. Be patient, I'm not going to change a thing and they will show, I guarantee.

(Edit: Fototime got back to me immediately with an apology of a server down. As I expected. All is well. They have glitches, but overall are really superior.)

Thank you.

Jim

I'm so glad to see those Hossoms. I've been thinking about J Hossom a lot lately, wondering what he's up to since I don't see much of his work around anymore. Love his style.
Great pictorial thread Coop, thanks again so much for the freeshare!

Jerry is still making incredible stuff --- in fact his best ever (in his own words). But they just seem to disappear as soon as he makes them.

Dear Coop,
Thanks to you and your tireless team for all the great work you produced (created) at this years BLADE Show. The shear magnitude of great work that keeps showing up never ceases to amaze me.

I don't know how you make my work look so good but I probably should have you do my drivers license picture, it needs help!! LOL

Thanks again,

Steve Janik
