Photos Knives of the Hot Zone

You know, there are a ton of people working to save lives in actual "Hot Zones" right now. You opening packs of TP at your house doesn't count.

I have a Vic classic in translucent green that sits on the counter I've been using to open stuff lately. I do properly disinfect it, along with anything coming into the house, after use.
Yes , of course . It's dark gallows humor .

I'm not making fun of health workers and all first responders at risk , they are heroes in my mind . Especially when many don't even have proper protective gear available , which is inexcusable IMO .

I know very well what a really serious hot zone is and we don't have that yet here in the USA and pray god we never will !

Certainly this covid 19 virus is worse than most we're used to here in the USA , but not even close to Ebola , etc . Luckily most of the worst ones are not the most easily spread like flu types . The hemorrhagic viruses are mostly arthropod borne . They require specific insect vectors or much closer contact to spread .

I would like to know why the government wasn't better prepared? How many books have been written about possible pandemics? How many movies have been made about them? How many politicians and doctors have been grandstanding over the decades?
Obviously it was all in vain... They didn't even have the sense to stock up on N95 masks not to mention anything else!!

You're also nowhere near the gallows...unless things are much worse at your house than you've made look in your pictures.

I'm pretty sure there are non-knife areas of the forum where you can talk at length about the virus.

o_O You are completely wrong ,IMO . Fact check yourself please . Virus are not spore formers . Most have fairly short half-life exposed to the environment .

Do as pleases you so far as the virus prevention . No skin off me !

I recommend mainly staying at home . Social distancing and properly fitted N95 (or better) mask is primary when exposure is unavoidable .

Eye protection necessary for personal contact . Proper hygiene , always.

Getting infected from a package , possible but far less likely than someone coughing / sneezing right in your face or directly onto your food .

Evolution in action is correct . We agree that much !

Other than criticism of my plan , do you have a alternative plan to share ?

Wipe all your stuff down with any disinfectant. Works instantly.

I don’t have any specific knife for opening packages, but here lately I’ve been carrying the hell out of my Buck 110. I figure all the brass can’t hurt.

I'm glad you asked.

Wash your hands after you get the package. Follow the Center for Disease Control guideline for that.

Leave the package alone for 24+ hours after delivery. After you open and unpack it wash your hands again.

If you can't wait to open the boxes wipe them down with antiseptic first. The last person prior to you to handle them is the most likely person who could have left the bug on them.

If you're further concerned with the contents you can wipe down with antiseptic. You can even create a rule where you have a routine to unpack and distribute contents around your house so you can be sure nothing falls through the cracks.

Some people suggest disposing of the packaging immediately. I keep it; if it was necessary to trace a chain of contact that packaging could be useful.

And keep washing your hands.

Well good for you on the precautions.... I have not gone to that great a length YET. That is coming on my next grocery store run when I will be wearing nitrile gloves and a N95 mask.... just in case. Fortunately I had a reasonably good supply of both prior to all of this virus business starting. I bought TP about two weeks before the area saw its first known case. Still in pretty good shape in that department.

It is the stay at home order that is troubling me... I can't even head to the woods to hike and wander around by myself.

Just hang crystals and a have crystal pyramid inside your house. Virus issue, solved. :D

EDC rotation is the same as prior to this dog & pony show. Work at a hospital so same old same old - Spyderco Rhino > Chaparral LW > Benchmade Bugout.

As for precautions I'm doing what I'm supposed/allowed to do, but poor judgement calls keep throwing a wrench into the mix. Thanks to providers not following protocols I am on possible exposure #3. Waiting on test results to come back to see if I get a 14 day quarantine.

Hope the best for you , brother. Thank you as well.

:) It's just not practical IMO to try to disinfect huge boxes of stuff , but yes we routinely disinfect smaller items especially non-porous plastic , metal etc ...like most knives . We are also not exactly oversupplied with disinfectants right now and are trying to conserve somewhat .

You don’t need to disinfect the box. Cut the box open, wipe down everything inside (bleach water works fine), and throw the box away.

Actually, you can even cut the tp packages open (then wash your hands) and store the rolls somewhere right off the bat. It isn’t gonna infect your bunghole.

Sounds good to me .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

From some past personal experience and reports of medical personnel that have to really scrub and glove repeatedly : it can eventually lead to some serious skin damage , sensitivity , and/or local allergic reactions . A good lotion can help prevent or alleviate this problem . And some hand cleaners and glove materials are less allergenic . :)

Sure , that works too . :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

There's many different ways to accomplish protecting from this virus and well worth the trouble , IMO .

Way too many people seem to be just proceeding as before , either not believing or not understanding the possible adverse consequences . :(

This exact type of pandemic ( natural source virus crossover from wild species contact) has been widely expected and predicted by the real experts for at least 50 yrs . I know this for a fact from working at USAMRIID .

An even greater concern was a full scale state sponsored attack using a weaponized biological agent , potentially much worse then this virus .

It is totally inexcusable and unconscionable that the USA especially was not much better prepared for either event , IMO .:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

We can do better than this in the future and I can only hope we will do so !

There are rules. Respectful disagreements are allowed. Insults and profanity are not. If you feel someone else has crossed the line, you can click the report button. Otherwise, let's stay on topic.
I have read that 48 hours or so can degrade the virus, so leaving it in a car couldn't hurt.

On the other hand, hoarding TP hurts everybody.
Not sure if you meant to imply I was hoarding ? But ... NO !

We were kinda "caught with our pants down" by the TP and other panic buying / hoarding and would have needed to resort to leaves or something pretty soon .

This TP was all from one bulk sales box from online Walmart and the only thing I could find for any sane price , for home delivery .

Not quite "just in time delivery " but too dang close for comfort ! :p

I don't even order deliveries that much.

I don't even sanitize or disinfect packages or my knife after opening packages with it.

I'm just unboxing things more often latley, and I use one of my 3 fixed blades for that job.
I'm really happy with the performance of the knife, I put shaving sharp toothy edge on it more than a month ago, it opened numerous packages, that's lots of tape, bubble wrap, cardboard and vacuum formed plastic packages and it's still sharp. Despite the fact I used it to cut up some of the cardboard boxes too. And the edge is still toothy.

You're also nowhere near the gallows..
Not here and now , in fact it's been an incredibly beautiful early spring and we have plentiful semi-wilderness right outside . :)

But ...still , I worry for the future . Not so much for us personally , but for this nation and the world that looks to the USA to help them stay or become free . :(
