Knives On Order 2015

The continuation of no orders coming in, and cancellations of existing orders, are making my decision of stopping taking orders coming closer to being the future of my business. It`s not an easy decision to make, and I hate the thought of doing it.

That is very unfortunate. Unfortunately people do not understand that when they cancel orders they are toying with the way someone puts food on the table. They just don't understand that all that time you put into their order just to have it canceled could have been invested elsewhere where you could have actually made some profit. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be.

That is unfortunate......what about nonrefundable deposits on orders? I work for myself John and I understand the periodic fustrations of self employment. The customer who wants something done yesterday has no problem cancelling work that you scheduled or taking their time paying on work you busted your butt to get done for them. Don't get me wrong, I love working for myself. Lots of great customers, but there's always bad with the good.

I wouldn't have any problem putting a deposit on scheduled work. Not sure how others would feel bout that.

I agree completely. A deposit, to hold your place in the que and to demonstrate a level of seriousness in the order, is a reasonable thing to require. I wouldn't have a problem with it and actually I was more than a little surprised when a deposit wasn't required with my first JK order.

I would hate to see you stop taking ordes John...as a knife guy, there was no better feeling than opening the custom work you have made for me when the package arrived in the mail. But if you need to make the decision to change how you do business and just post on the forum what you periodically make, I am sure the members of this forum will continue to support you. As far as asking for a deposit, I cant imagine anyone who truly wants a custom knife made would take issue with that.

It's not the cancellations that are bothering me, they are way before I plan on starting them, it's that no orders are coming in. I don't want to get to the point of having to order materials one at a time for orders, I prefer to order once a month to save shipping costs.

Looks like this thread will be closed in August. With no new orders the only way to get one of my knives will be when they are offered for sale. The problem with that is you don't know if the knife you want will be offered in a sale. I'm open to suggestions.

That's a bummer, wish I had some good ideas to offer. I had two knives in mind for the future just not right away more towards the October time frame.

I'm going to attempt to explain how I order materials. My business credit cards billing cycle ends on the 10th of each month. On the 11th I order the materials needed to cover orders for the next month. As an example, if I have orders due between the 10th of the current month through the 9th of the following month, I order what is needed for them. Any order placed after the 11th would not have materials ordered for it until the 11th of the following month to avoid extra shipping expenses. Does that make any sense?

Not at all, but that's why we like you, John.:D

It makes sense to me, you purchase all of your materials for the orders that are currently placed, that are due prior to the 11th. So there is a set purchasing and shipping schedule and it allows you to bring in your materials for the standing orders in one fell swoop.
I find it smart in a financial aspect, but difficult since you may get stuck with materials, and having to carry over inventory. All while hoping that someone else *Might* order something using the materials that someone just dropped out of.

I don't like the idea of you not taking orders, but I do understand it.

I still would like for you to create my knife, once I get around to having the spare funds, even if I had to pay extra due to shipping in "My" materials.

Any materials from an order that might be cancelled can be used in knives in sales.

Easy...if you wanna place an order, you'll have to pay the extra shipping costs.
What kind of shipping costs are you looking at John for single material orders?

Updated the list. Considering not making any knives for a July sale, but then I will finish all the orders on the list by the end of July. I`m not quite ready to close the shop.

About $9.85 for handle material, and about $14.95 for steel.

That's not bad, keep a running stock of your four best selling handle materials, two sizes of O1, and one bar of stainless since that won't rust, on hand.
It won't be much out of pocket to sit on and if someone wants something other than what is currently available the order will have to get pushed to the next ordering cycle, unless they are willing to pay for shipping.

I know ill definitely want another knife around Christmas time. haven't decided on which model yet though.

Knives in red will start next Monday, I`ve got some stuff to take care of this week.

I`m also cancelling the end of July sale. I`ve got 6 knives left over from the June sale, and can`t afford just having more knives sitting around.

I`ll probably be starting August orders in July, but will contact customers to see if they want them early. I was going to do another sale in late July, but after the last one I just can`t afford it. As it stands now, when all the orders are completed I will decide how to proceed with the business.
