Knives you won't buy (and why)

 Wow, some of you guys are awfully specific!

I'm also surprised to see a stronger focus on aesthetics than I expected.

Let's face it, for the vast majority of us another knife is a want, not a need. I mean, I need a few knives, but I sure as heck don't need a drawer full of folders like the one I've got. So once you've found what works for you, why not try to find something that works for you and also looks great?

Heck, my next planned purchase is a good example. I'm absolutely gonna grab a Benchmade Crooked River. Will it do anything better than my Manix 2 XL? Nope, but it will do all the same things while looking a heck of a lot nicer.

No knives from companies led by felons.

No knives from or in the vein of QM, Mantis or the like.

No Microtechs.

No silly overbuilt overpriced clown folders (I prefer my knives being able to serve a purpose like actually being used and being able to be carried in a pocket (yeah, I know, perish the thought)).

Fair enough. For me personally, I'm excited by different combinations of highly functional parts and design features. There are lots of different handle designs, for example, that manage to be comfortable and practical in different ways. The handle on the Cold Steel Spartan and the handle on the Spyderco Delica are very different, yet both manage to offer great ergonomics. In my books, they look great, too!

Lately I've also been super interested in knives that can cram a lot of performance in a thin and lightweight package, like the aforementioned Delica and the new CS Broken Skull. Can't wait for the 52100/CF Military. Oh, man. I'm going to save up for that. Probably going to be at least $300 CAD, and I'm willing to pony up for it, too.

I'm right there with you most of the time, function>form, but I get why guys value the aesthetics. And I sometimes do as well. ;)

Some knives do both in spades, like the Sage 1 and the Espada, or the CRKT Ripple...or the new Outrage! I definitely want one of those.

Rike RK1503 - I love the way it looks, and I'm a big fan of that blade shape...but it's just too small. I'd end up not carrying/using it; and I'm just not in the market for more folders to be stored in my desk. (Especially at that price)

- Recurve blades
- Serrated blades
- Stupidly thick blades that don’t cut
- Damascus blades (glad to read I’m not the only one who thinks they look ugly)
- Bead Blasted blades
- Folders that weigh more than 5.5 oz
- Counterfeits
- Folders with scale texture under the pocket clip that is so aggressive it shreds your pockets.

Gentlemen( or what I refer to as girly) knives

Spyderco knives are fugly and I dislike their cultist fanboyz

Anything with carbon fibre grips

Knives made in china

No combo edges
No coated blades
No Emersons I love the knives but had a poor customer service experience
No Striders love the knives but the ones I've had developed sloppy locks and they have never responded to my emails
And I'll never own a Sebenza I have a few $500.00+ knives and I don't think the Seb compares

Yeah, it's all been said. For me:
Not crazy about the Spyderco hump and hole and all the spade shaped blades (though the Police has a certain dagger-like appeal)
Not crazy about Waves
USA is great, but not a deal breaker if Chinese as long as the make and F&F is good
Anything below 3" definite "no", anything about 4" probable "yes"
I used to carry traditionals, but not anymore. I like one-handed open, but even more reason is: I now have holes in 3 pairs of shorts (probably caused by flipper tangs) and have to be aware of them falling out. I used to avoid pocketclips like the plague, but now I prefer them, because of the hole issue and they don't compete for space with my keys and cell.

Folders & anything over 20$.
However, If its something I know will flip for respectable cash, anything goes...

That does not apply to knives I make. Those are art projects selling at 2-600 hundred on average.
But those seldom contain over 20$ material. The remainder is time & talent.

Did anyone else see this? Specifically the part in bold? I'd like to see the knives that you make (not in this thread, obviously).

Well yeah, aesthetics ARE important despite some folks' claim that "I only buy USEful things." That may be true, but come on, if you have two options, both are equally useful and both are the same price, people generally tend to pick the more aesthetically pleasing choice.

-Any Spyderco fixed blade.

Because of the stupid hole they drill on all the blades (it didnt happen before)

I absolutely refuse.

- Mantis Knives & associates ..etc...

Not only because they're ugly as sin, but because al the other bs they carry with them

- Any thick "tactical" folder. Regardless of brand.

- Any zombie knife of any kind. Any low quality Mtech and the likes knife.

Not even good as gifts, imo.

I'd also have trouble buying knives from companies I deem shady or outright demonic, like Blackwater
