Hey Hogger's. I've seen some really nice Krein grinds on various blades, including Busses. I'm sure Busse offers that service. Why go to someone else then? Don't get me wrong, Tom's the man. He just did a folder for me.

bill seigle also does mods on busses, and pretty much anything else.

if you were to send your knife back to busse, it would take much longer, but still be covered by their warranty.

by sending it to bill or tom, you get it within a couple weeks, but typically the warranty is voided.

just a trade off, one way or the other.

Morimotom nailed it. Sometimes the other guys, our own BAN included, can do superb mods quickly. However, Jerry has posted that mods done outside the shop void the Busee warranty. I am sure all the mods are done in such a way that the integrity of the blade is not comprimised. So, as Morimotom said, its a trade off. ;)

98. Tom put a zero grind on my HD-7. The blade shipped out today, back to me. Should be interesting.

You didn't answer the question.....why did you send it him instead of back to Emerson? They do custom work correct?

98. Sorry. Emerson told me they would not do it! This was six years back. I was confused by their response and said, "oh well." Maybe things have changed or I caught someone on a weird day. Tom Krein said my HD blade looks like a Bee-otch!! Can't wait to put er back in the handle.

why do mods void the Busse warranty? I thought that Busse would still honour the warranty, within reason. I may be wrong, but someone told me that. Removing the coating or thinning the blade doesn't mean the blade should chip or crack right?

in any case, does the Busse Custom shop thin blades or remove coating and apply satin finishes as a aftermarket service?

Lycosa, Emerson does not zero grind blades which do not originally have the zero grind. You do appreciate that the zero grind is something he offers on his customs (and only on certain models). If he zero ground any blade which the customer sent in, then there would really be no distinguishing feature between a custom and a production, would there (other than cosmetic)...

Thats a good question seeing that even in the process of removing the coating one could effect the blades integrity.

Thinning a blade from 0.25 to 0.18 shouldn't affect the integrity also. Otherwise, is the Busse warranty only valid if the blades are of certain thickness?

btw, I hope I'm not stiring up anything, I like Busses but was surprised that modded Busses are not warranted - I thought it was still covered if the mods are within reason.

Spyken,
Thanks for the explanation on the Emerson zero grind. Now that makes sense to me. Man, there's all kinds of stuff go'n on in knifeland. It's always interesting!

I think that the warranty will cover anything that a person can do on their own. removing coatings and putting a better edge on a knife is not a major modification.

Major Mods are what Grinducci did to the GW and what Ban did to his CGFBM. Those mods remove lots of metal and if not done properly can flash heat the steel beyond a safe temp even if it does not feel like it is getting to hot. However, I think that Ducci, Ban and all the other knife guys doing mods know this and are carefull.

Give me one of your SHBMs, I'll grind on it and then you let me know by beating on it if I affected the heat treat!

Please, this is a family forum. Please take talk of grinding on blades to the pirates cove.

There, just trying to help our moderators out, seems like they are over worked lately. :D

I agree with Cobalt.

Jerry has no idea if the guys who did the regrind did it slowly and carefully to make sure they didn't stuff up the temper or just went flying in like a bull in a china shop so when they decide to chop down the local street sign to show what their reground FFBM can do they snap it in half and cause Jerry to honor his warranty.

It aint that hard to wreck the temper actually...I did it to an old emerson commander with a dremel..could never get a decent edge on it again :) ...
