Kudos To One Of Our Own, Ken Erickson...Blade Show 2012 "Best Folder" Award

I knew it was the best I had seen when I saw the first picture. Glad to see Ken get the official recognition he deserves.

Congratulations Ken, that's just fantastic news!

Thanks for letting us know and big congrats to Ken. He has been pushing the envelope for years now on his knife making and it's great to see him get some recognition.

I enjoyed seeing that knife in person almost as much as I enjoyed meeting Ken and Nettie.

The pleasure was all mine...it made me think back last night to that great article you wrote in Knife World on Ken a couple years back and how much of what we opined has been coming to fruition.

That´s great to hear! Congratz to Ken!

Well - bein honest - the folder that won, is a real beauty and a great piece of craftmanship :)

Kind regards
Andi

Now I really wish I had been able to attend this year.

Great job Ken!

Hats off to Gus and Richard for being the best friends a person could have; to Elliott and Mike for caring to let us know what's up; and to the Wizard from Waupaca, who embodies the Soul of Sheffield!!
My compliments, Ken!! You deserve that recognition completely!!

Go to You Tube, type Blade Show 2012 Knives in the subject box, click on the appropriate box and you can watch Ken talk about the Horseman Knife in detail. He goes over the complete construction of the knife describing each blade. He uses the name ne6359 on You Tube.

Thanks for pointing that out,Ed. And thank you, pertinux, for posting the video.

That is one very impressive knife to say the least! I didn't know it had a nutcracker on it. I cannot even begin to imagine the skill it must take to make a knife like that.

You and Charlie opined, I just wrote down what you said, and Ken did all of the work in the ensuing years. But it sure looks like some of your comparisons of Ken to other makers back in 2010 are starting to come to fruition.

Congratulations, Mr. Erickson.

That is a fantastic piece.

Your dedication to the traditional patterns is commendable.

A very complex pattern and an impressive execution of it.

Congratulations Ken. Spending time with you and Nettie during the show was nothing short of a pleasure.

I do not have words to describe the knife. A well deserved award to recognize your efforts made my show.

People of real talent and skill are often modest and dignified, they don't need to boast or seek praise, their power is in their art.

This knife, clearly inspired by the Sportsman's knife of the Sheffield era, is art. Attention to detail and beauty is deeply impressive, that stag is wonderful and to get all this into 'two-thick' , is a testament to a rare ability. I also very much agree with what he said in the video about blade handle ratio. All too often a decent knife is marred by an ill proportioned short blade in an inappropriate long handle.

The right man won the prize.

Regards, Will

Will,

Your words ring true.

After meeting Ken in person for the first time last year and having the chance to spend a good amount of time with him this time around, I can say without reservation that you are very much correct. The knife is a rare pattern for a maker to attempt. I know of three who were successful to date (Richard, Joel and Ken) and you described their attitudes well. Knives aside, to be able to call people of their character friends is a fortunate thing. Knowing them has made me a better person.

Hollow words, but thank you for everything Ken.

Gus
