Kukri Question

Hello again, Andrew. I was very happy to get the notification with a reply from you as your posts are so informative.

The distal taper makes so much sense. I personally found the Condor to be very awkward feeling and not at all like an extension of the arm as is often said about the Kukris wielded by the Gurkhas.

We're looking forward to the day you're able to start production again. In ordering a HSI, am I correct in that the 11.5" blade and the 5.5" handle is the default offering the best weight and balance? Is so, then I suppose the only other decision is stacked leather vs. Micarta. While I couldn't find a picture of it on your site, I'm thinking the Micarta makes for a knife to be handed down for generations.

Thanks again for your insight.

I don't have any personal experience with the condor, but I can confirm that it doesn't have any taper until just before the tip which could be a big aspect of what you're describing.
The 11.5" Historical Service Issue is the most versatile of the three blade lengths in my opinion, has the historical gurkha connection and is also the best stepping off point for a greater understanding of what these traditional blades can do. What's the best weight or balance comes down to the individual and the application, but given what you've said I'd suggest the 11.5 for sure. As for handle lengths, it affects the balance less than you might imagine as the tang is very thin back there, the fittings are of sheet metal and our materials are light. You should choose a handle length based on your hand size. If you hold a ruler like a hammer, how wide is your palm from one end to the other? For reference here is my 3.5" averageish sized hand with skinny fingers. I would choose the 4.25" because the palm swells and flare will match up better with my hand for better retention. If my hand was any bigger than 3.75" I'd say to go for the 5.5". We are also looking into potentially doing a medium size so we can make sure to fit everyone either snug or loose if they choose.

For handle materials both stacked leather and micarta are great. Stacked Leather is a little lighter and more shock absorbent but Micarta is more weatherproof and durable. You're right that the website is lacking photos of it which is super weird I guess I've just been sharing things to instagram and neglecting our site a bit. I'll upload a few tonight and share you the link to where the info is on the website.
Take care,
Andrew and the boys at Kailash
