Lanny's Clip Thread

SAC...what's the problem on the shield, hard to tell on the pictures? It's the traditional "bull balls" shield for the Lanny's clip. a fit issue, or slightly raised maybe and not flush? Very fine looking knife no matter.
The LC looks good with practically any shield. Do love the long bomb on Sean's. The Acorn too! Hope to see mine with a barbie shield in a couple weeks...

There's nothing wrong with the fit! I just have an aversion to carrying around a spare set in my pocket! It's just a personal preference against that shield in particular!

Thanks for starting this thread bleh ... it has sure thrown up some mighty good knives & it is certainly a very fine pattern.
Actually the general blade shape is very reminiscent of the classic Buck 112 (it being a hollow grind I realize - just the general clip shape.) Please don't run me out of town as a heretic :o

I have trawled the thread but haven't been able to get a fix on the thickness of the blade or the thickness of the handle. The Blade 'seems' to be reasonably thick/sturdy set into a slim handle on 'most' of the knives here?

Could someone indulge me and show a couple of photos of the one of your beaut Lanny's showing the the knife from "above & below" ?(for want of a better description)

Thanks in advance Derek

I'm not sure this is what you are looking for, Derek. Here's a Brent Cramer Lanny's Clip Jr. It's 3.5" closed. The width at the butt end is 9/16" that tapers to 1/4" at the bolster. The blade width is 3/32" max. Here's the link to another image in this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1282361-Lanny-s-Clip-Thread?p=14694158#post14694158.

I think you'll find some variances in the different makers interpretations of Tony Bose's pattern. The Case/Bose collaboration (which I don't have) would likely be the closest to the real thing.

Thanks Gary that is exactly what I was after - interesting proportions - but this gives me a better fix on things.
Given the prices even for the Case version I think the only way I will ever have one is to make it myself.

Thanks for taking the time to respond

Derek

I'm fortunate to have acquired a most unusual Lanny's Clip made by John Lloyd. Do you recognize the scale material? It's recycled bowling ball, a duck pin bowling ball.

I had a good time with that knife. I guy gave me a dozen old duckpin or candlestick balls and cutting them up was a beast. The material is very hard rubber but it polishes very nicely and should wear as tough as .....well...a bowling ball! They come in a thousand colors....white with red, all black, red, green/black. red/black, orange/white....any combo you can think of. I like the multi color the most but opinions will vary!!!!!!!! That pattern is the one Tony Bose gave me so it is true to the name....Lannys' Clip.

Here is another of John's Lanny's Clips. This one in ebony is slimmer than the duck pin knife. I enjoy using both of these fine knives.

That's an interesting one, Blakeshitch. Almost half way between a Lanny's clip and a zulu or trapper handle, I like it! How long is it closed, may I ask?

I'm also a big fan of the deep, large nail nick in the position where a long pull would usually go. It makes me think the knife is on the smaller side, but could just be an illusion. And are those micarta liners under the ebony?

It was the deep nail nick and burgundy liners that sold me on this one. It is 4" closed. The nail nick looks really good, but I can pinch it open even though it has the most pronounced snap of any knife I own.

Did you ever receive your LC from the maker in South Africa?? If so, could you post up some pics?

I did, but it turned out to be closer to a Buck 110 than a Lanny's Clip.

I was fairly disappointed that it didn't match the profile or shape, so I ended up trading it off.

Bummer!! I was looking forward to it too. I wonder if it was so off base since he probably didn't have Tony's pattern to base it off of, just pics.

Some of the blame undoubtedly lies on me. I gave him artistic license. I think I make a lot of requests for the blade shape, which he mostly hit, but I didn't articulate that the handle shape was equally important. I sent him a few pictures of Lanny's Clips that I like, but I never called out details on the handles, so he may have overlooked it. That particular handle pattern is what he uses on most of his folders.

Does anyone know of a blaze orange burlap micarta Lanny's Clip? Possibly Orange and Black micarta? That would be a fantastic color combo to get my hands on.
