Large folder vote thread.

4. Micarta

1. Spear-point (Native)

1. Flat

2. 4.5" to 5"

2. Compression lock

That's my preference. :)

Handle: G-10, Blade: Wharnecliffe, Grind: flat, Length: 5 to 5.5 but not over 5.5 to stay Texas-legal, Lock: front lock. A super-size Yojimbo! :) (A spearpoint is OK with me but will have to compete with other large spearpoints already on the market, such as the SERE 2000 and the massive Lone Wolf Harsey folder.)

when you say large folder 5" or so I think of uses.. Hunting or self defense..
So, large knife gets a clip point or a drop point {my preference}
handles have to be tough, slip resistant, and easy to clean FRN works here with deep grooving. {G-10 if you want self defense}
Flat grind
lock back good and trusty works for me.

Ken, with a basic lock-back format, your idea might work, but God help anyone trying to carry something with a blade that large and with a sharpened swedge in tip-up mode with any other kind of locking system! Even a lock-back is marginal with a 4" or more blade, especially with a sharpened swedge. And, yes, I know what a forward lock is.

I am editting this reply to add a link to a thread in the Camillus Forum where both Will Fennell of Camillus and Daryll Ralph, the designer of the CUDA MAXX 5.5, commented rather pungently on tip-up carry for that knife. I suggest that any of you interested in large bladed folders read it. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=189683&perpage=20&pagenumber=1

An interesting link from Hugh, which led to other interesting links.

I like tip up carry because it puts the clip on the butt end, and for no other reason.
I move a knife around in my hand a lot, depending on use, and a clip at the pivot end annoys me.

Does anyone else besides me carry their knife in their waistband?

Oops.
Thread drift. :)

I apologize for the tone, but the thought of tip-up carry with a large bladed folder is just downright scary for me. As Darryl Ralph says about his CUDA MAXX, he makes it tip-down because he values his private parts. It is not just them, but all of my parts that I value, which is why I so strongly urge Spyderco to make any large bladed folder tip-down.

You notice that my post asked for the option of tip-up or tip-down carry. I have carried a number of the larger bladed Spydercos which are tip-up carry and have never had a problem. The only problem I've had was with a FRN Native which had a very inadequate detant to begin with (as many of the FRN Natives did). Other Spyderco large-bladed, tip-up knives like the Endura, Spyderhawk, Matriarch, other Natives, or the Lum tanto folder in tip-up mode,, haven't exhibited any tendency to open in the pocket.

I think the Military is a great knife - for me, the only thing which keeps it on display and not an EDC is it's tip-down carry mode. I know that not everyone prefers tip-up as I do, so the option (like the Lil' Temp) should satify more people than just manufacturing the knife one way or the other. And more potential sales make this model more likely to become a reality :D

Lock: Compression lock

Other suggestion:
Pattern: Clip-point Recurve

G-10

Spear Point (Native) Or Clip Point fighter style

Flat Ground

5.5" to 6"

Compression Lock

Enlarged Native or RAD/Mini-RAD Collaboration would but either.

Comments - make it MBC rated, use dual liners. Dual carry options, tip up, tip down, left/right. As versatile as possible so even a short run leaves no one out because of dexterity. Use S30V for the blade steel.

Guess what I want? :D

Large Native!

-G-10 handles: black is fine, any color would do, IMO (olive would be nice)
-spear point, of course
-4 to 4.5" blade
-slightly wider from edge to spine in keeping with its larger size
-frontlock, with Boye Dent
-MBC rated, possibly with a SS liner or two
-blade material should be at least CPM 440V to satisfy the steel snobs :) (if it were me, AUS-6 would do it!)
-spring steel clip, with barrel bolt (or for those wanting tip-switchability, four sets of screw positions for complete ambidexterity and tip direction choice)

If the blade gets to be over 4.5", then perhaps abandon the "Large Native" concept and make it into a Native/SERE Attack hybrid. Try to keep it lighter than a Chinook, but heavier than the Military. The compression lock would be okay with me (hey, I don't have one yet).

To recap...LARGE NATIVE MBC!!!!

Thanks for asking!

Karl
