Larry,

I hate to have to come here to do this, but but you just disapeared on me and stopped answering my emails... again.

Please send the MO to the address in the US I provided you on 05/23/05 when I replied your "Please send me your mailing address and I will send you payment. Thanks...Larry" email.

I understand you went through rough times, but I've sent your knife on July 2004 and I have yet to receive payment for it.

My contact in the US is yet to receive the MO (neither I got a tracking number or any other communications from you) and I'd really like to get what we arranged for my work. Not to mention that I'm still at loss for the shipping charges, which might not be much, but I shouldn't be out of cash from my own pocket.

Please get in touch with me and let me know what's going on.

Regards,

Ariel

Ariel, sorry to see you are having this problem. Hopefully berettaman12000 will do what needs to be done and take care of his responsibilities.

I just don't get it. What kind of person would not pay for the knife he was sent?. :thumbdn:

Here's a compiled brief of what happened.
I have ALL the emails, but I don't have time to do this with exact timestamps.

1. Larry contacts me to make him a knife similar to one I've posted on BFC.
2. We discuss specifics for the knife and costs, both for the knife and shipping.
3. Larry tells me he won't be able to send payment til mid July (we were in May) and I agree with it.
4. Larry tells me he will try to have my payment for mid June, so I finish the knife early.
5. Larry tells me he won't have the money to send til mid July (no problem here, that's what we originally arranged)
6. Since I have the knife already finished, I offer to send it to him now and he can pay me later in a month.
7. Larry agrees and tells me he will write a review of the knife to post on BFC.
8. Larry contacts me to tell me he had to go to the doctor for some chest pains and to let me know and that he wants to order a new one, this time a skinner. He also tells me he will post a review of the knife on BFC.
9. Larry's brother contact me to let me know he had to be taken to a hospital for a heart problem. (mid to late July)
10. Larry gets back online and tells me he sent the MO. (mid August)
11. I start working on the blade for the new knife.
12. Larry made a claim to get refunded for the missing MO (mid September) and asks me if I can wait another month to get the payment, as they take 30/45 days to issue the refund. I say OK.
13. I keep working on the new blade, and Larry say it's not the proper shape, so I re grind it and send new pics.
14. Larry tells me to stop the knife as he wants to square the first one before I finish the second one, and that the PostMaster told him it can take up to 3 months. (mid October)

Now, up to this point, we exchanged a lot of friendly emails, we talked about life, how hard was to make new healthy habits, etc, etc, etc. so everything was fine, but that was the last email I got from him, he just desapeared on me, although I realized he was posting on BFC all the time.

After that I sent him an email asking for news on:

21/12/04
02/14/05
05/20/05

Finally on 05/23/05, after having tracer-san posting here and on a thread Larry was monitoring, I got a laconic email stating

"Please send me your mailing address and I will send you payment. Thanks...Larry"

I sent a US address (I used someone in the US so he could send the MO the easy way and not to worry again about Int'l correspondance) and I asked what had happened that he dissapeared and all, and again, nothing.

On 06/11/05 I emailed him again to let him know that the guy that was suposed to receive the MO still haven't got it. No Answer from Larry.

On 07/05/05 I emailed him again. No Answer.

On 07/29/05 I I emailed him again with a link to this thread. No Answer.

And that's basically all that happened :(

Ariel

Larry, I don't know what happened to you, but send the MO and I'll forget about the whole thing and post here that I received payment.

Unfortunately, after 12+ months, I think that you'll play helll trying to collect from this deadbeat !

Ariel. . . . hope that everything works out and you get your money !

Wow. I think you qualify as a custom knife maker abuse/neglect investigator !!! :D

Ariel, I hope this works out with you getting your money. Considering your work AND your patience, you deserve it.

Hopefully your case pans out, Larry was the only person that I've ever gotten
a bounced check from, surprised me, it took a while to get a money order from
him but, it did arrive. What was distressing is that the knife I made the sheath
for was a Tim Zowada fixed blade, a long time ago, and when I contacted Tim
to compliment him on his knife, he said he wished I had kept it, because Larry
still owes him for the knife and to this day I don't know that he's made good
on that debt yet...:(

When we finally connected via phone, he said he knew there were a couple
checks that went out that were going to bounce but didn't know it would
be mine.

Back then he went by Larry in KY

Ariel, I certainly hope that you eventually get your money from this guy. Unfortunately, a satisfactory outcome seems unlikely.

Anyone who would bounce a check on Gary Graley is carrying a world class load of bad karma around for life and your current situation will add a hefty addition to his burden but will probably not result in any immediate positive result for you.

So it seems that this is a reoccurring pattern.

I thought that it was rather humorous when I saw the occupation line. . . ."abuse/neglect investigator". . . .because berettaman12000 or Larry in KY has definitely abused Ariel's kindness and neglected his obligations !

I wonder how many more monikers he's hiding behind ?

Isn't there a way to limit his access to the GB&U only? People like this disgust me!

Hmmmm, Larry in KY, I'm wondering if he uses KY when he Fvcks you. :barf:

Not that it matters, how much is it he owes you? I imagine that this has changed your feelings and policy about trusting customers, and sending knives out before receiving payment?

I was just about to say that the only excuse good enough is that he's dead, but he apparently was online yesterday, so, that would be a pretty neat trick. :)

I'm sorry for this crap Arial, I have really enjoyed your "in progress" posts, and your work is very unique and special, I hope this works out somehow.

Thank you for the support gentlemen :)

I'd like Larry to post on this thread to tell me what he plans to do. His contact information at this point is still private, as well as the ammount he owes me, as I still believe he's going to do the right thing.

It wasn't a bad deal for Larry as it was my first custom order from overseas and I priced it accordingly.

This is the knife in question:

For the record, I do believe he was sick, as we exchanged a lot of emails about it, on how he was making his life healthier with non smoking and stuff like that.

Ari,

Both Larry and another member that shat remain anonymous made me decide to never ever send a knife again without receiving payment in advance for it. It's not only a matter of who's responsible for missing MOs but also a way of keeping both the customer and knifemaker relationship healthy.

If a knife I send doesn't arrive to it's destination, I have to offer a full refund or make a new knife, period. That's my obligation as a seller and what I've done in the past when some punk in the Argentina Post Office stole a 3 knives set headed to the US (that's why I only use DHL now)

So when a MO gets lost, I can understand that some people might have troubles producing the money again to send me without being reimbursed first, I'm not rich and I know how it goes, and that's why in the only three cases that this happened, I didn't rush anyone... But I have a limit, and that limit is when the buyer goes to a point where he has the knife already and just don't care anymore about getting the money to me, for whatever reason that there is.

To avoid this hassles is that now I take payments on PayPal and with regular US Money Orders/Cashiers Checks sent directly to someone in the US and I ship DHL, even if it's more expensive and makes me sell less small knives.

This way, the customer pays like he's buying something in the US and I get the knife to him in a secure and traceable way in less than 4 days, so he doesn't have to do anything extra to buy something from other country and receives is in just some days, without risks of being stolen or weeks delays.

So in addition of striving to make new knives, with new techniques and materials, I also take great pride in making the customer experience a very pleasant one, asking all kinds of questions, sending pictures of the knifemaking process, and finally, making the payment/reception of the knife as easy as I can.

And I'm extremely glad to say that all the rest of my customers were happy with how I handled things and with my knives and I'm very happy of how each one of them conducted themselves. I might have a couple of bad apples, but the rest of my clients are real gentlemen and ladies :)

Regards,

Ariel

When I first noticed this thread I sent Larry an email letting him know that he should give his side of the story. He emailed me back and said that he didn't think he was going to respond to this thread, because he didn't see any good coming from it. So Ariel, I doubt very much that he is going to post here.

He also gave me what appeared to be his side of the story. I don't want to post what was sent to me in a private email, but I will do so if Larry doesn't come here and stand up like a man.
