Forgive my newness here, but I've read and re-read and as best I can tell this is an LB8 with an LB7 blade and staglon. Serial is 3350. Figured I'd go ahead and add it anyway, in case it helps. Just received this as a gift from a friend whose Grandfather recently died. Afraid I don't know anything else about it. Other than it did come with a black button belt sheath. And it's totally awesome. Such a nice solid feel to it. I'll be keeping this for a while.

3350 - still confused about the 3 pin vs 4 pin

That's an AWESOME knife you have there. My LB-7 was a constant companion for many a year. I suspect this will be yours.

Just received as a gift 3 Pin,Schrade + USA LB 7 #BB20892 I would love to know what date this was made.

just go back in this thread and in one of the posts ranges of serial numbers with approximate dates are given. BB is the last of the serialized numbers after that no serial number.

This serial number begins with Q. Newish knife?

Adding to this thread with my second post on the forum.. Hi all.

From what I read on an earlier post in this thread, this may be a low serial number single "Alpha"?
I bought it at L&H Automotive & Tire Service back in 1982 for $19.95.

It's been stored in the original box for 30+ years.

I don't remember ever carrying or using it.

Does this look like normal aging / patina?
Is there anything I should do to preserve it?

Regards, Ken

*** Update ***
Just remembered when I looked at the back of the sleeve that covers the box....
This was a sent as a "replacement" for my original Bear Paw. It's serial number was U16735.

Hi Ken, WELCOME to the forum. :D
$19.95 for an Uncle Henry LB8 in 1982? That was cheap! My LB7 cost $30. (I think) in 1977.

I would try using a bit of oil on the blade and gently try to work some of that rust out with a soft cloth. You can use Brasso or similar on the bolsters.

Thanks Ballenxj,

It's not rust on the blade, it thinks it's the original oil or preservative that's aged & discolored.
I took the pic's with my phone in a dimly lit garage. I'll try and get some better ones and replace those above.
The knife was new when I bought it has has never been out of the box except when I would take a look at it every 5-10 years or so.

Really didn't know if I should shine it up and make it pretty or leave it as is.
I've seen/read a few times about people destroying their antique's by cleaning them up.
Didn't know if that applied here..

Regards, Ken

As long as you are just removing dried oil and crud, and tarnish on brass, you won't hurt the knife or it's value. I have gotten quite a few with old factory oil on them. I used mineral oil or olive oil to wipe them clean.

Thanks Codger,
I took your advice and rubbed it down.
Half a dozen gun patches, Baristol oil, and a bit of elbow grease....

One more question..
Now that I've removed the factory oil, what is a proper prep to put it back in storage?

Regards, Ken

Greetings,

I've got this old LB7 here that I carried in the Navy for a lot of years. Can't recall when or where I got it. Would like to know more about it - if there's any info. on the year of manufacture, blade composition, wood used, etc. Would appreciate any info. Thanks in advance. - Chief O (USN, RET.)

Per your spec's, here's the knife basic info:

AY3905 (3 pin) - Don't know type of etch/machining done

LB7 USA.

If you go to page 3 of this thread, post 45, there is information on serial nos./dates, etc. It has been a while since I read this whole thread, but I am sure there must be more info added. A few pictures would help, I would imagine.

The people on this Schrade Collectors Forum are a first class bunch.

just to let you know if anyone is collecting the LB 7's like i do. and need a BBxxxxx to finish their serialized knives there is one now available on the auction site. me i have one so don't need it want it but don't need it, lol.

just bringing this up to help with the LB 8 4 pin post. apparently the change happened quite close to the beginning. mine is only 1979 before this one. course it is 3 pin so my conjecture is still looking good?

howdy all!
new member, first post :D

i was searching the internets for info on the LB7, & that brought me to this thread... i've read all 12 pages & have to say thanks so much for all this valuable info on the schrade lockback series!
i received my first LB7 as a birthday present around 1979, i had fallen for the knife in the pretty red display at a local sporting goods store, same as ea42's in this post:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/736956-A-VERY-Early-LB-7
after many requests, my uncle purchased it for me, along with a serious talk about being careful with big knives... i carried it for many years & was pretty sad when it was stolen... i replaced it with a 3-pin, but it was never the same feel as my first... fast forward & i discover an abundance of LB7s on the auction sites, wish i knew the serial # of my original, then i would have a real quest in finding it, but for now i'll just have to search for the same feel...

before i get into the knives, i have a question about serial numbers, & that is how do you tell the difference between the letter "I" & the number "1". just received an LB7 won at auction, went for it because seller told me serial number was "16357" which would place it's manufacture date in 1977... upon inspection it certainly looks like 16357, but it could also be I6357 depending on the font for the I?
either way, it was a steal for $30 & from what i can tell is in very good condition for a 36 year old, a little cleaning & it just might flick ;)

16357 - four pin
SCHRADE+
U.S.A. LB7

890947 - four pin
SCHRADE+
U.S.A. LB7
(auction win, in transit)

AX67957 - three pin
Uncle Henry
SCHRADE+
LB7 U.S.A.
(purchased new at REI in 1993)

I apparently have a first year of production/serial numbering of the LB7. It is a 4 pin with what appear to be rosewood bolsters and is marked as follows:

SCHRADE+
U.S.A. LB7

S/N is 9106 I believe but it also reads 9016 if read with the open blade pointed to the left! Just the fact that the serial number can be read either way and reads fine is interesting. The 1 is stamped as a straight vertical line and the 9 and 6 look identical except for orientation. Just for giggles my house address number is 1001 which reads the same in both directions and whether read right side up or upside down!
