LB7 Bear Paw LB Survey

Hi Steffen, WELCOME to the forum. :)
The colour of the of the wood is differs on the sides. Right side(same side as the serial number) is light brown, like a lot of the other LB7's you've posted here.
The left side is a lot darker. Can almost look black if not viewed in good light.

Is this normal on these? The knife have never been damaged/repaired.
This does not sound normal to me. I have looked at quite a few LB7's and not seen that. Is it possible the knife had been laid in oil or stain of some sort?

It possibly faded after laying in a display case in the sun or under a light for a long time. I've not seen it before either. The phenolic resin impregnation generally makes the wood colorfast. Welcome to the forum St3ff3n!

i have a couple of knives where the colour of the handle is distinctly darker than the other side. i just figured that was a normal abnormal schrade thing.

Scale cut from the end of one sheet of material with the opposite scale from the next sheet maybe?

Thanks for the response :)

Got some updates on the knife.
According to my dad he got it for his 25th birtday from some hunting buddys. That was in march 1983, and before this the knife have been imported from America to Norway for sale. So it must be a couple of years older than I originally thought.
He also said that the difference in colour had been like that sience he got it.

Here's some photo's:

These are four LB7s I bought a few years ago. Notice the bottom one. The color difference isn't as extreme as yours but it is different.

I really need to research these things before putting stuff on Ebay. I had no idea about 3 pin - 4 pin deal or dating the serial numbers. Check out the color difference in these three.

Off the bay, I picked up a Uncle Henry Schrade+ LB7 USA with MAC on the blade, Serial Number AY94074.

I also do look for knives with different scale colors. Get tired of one side turn it over.

I found it in terrible shape. I'm gonna try and do something with it before I post a pic

Schrade put out this set with black handles. If you look the set had its own serial# on the face of the bolster. I don't believe the lb7 scales were susceptible to uv degradation like the staglon was. I've seen lb5's with wide variations of color from side to side. I just figured they were end of days knives or just not matched correctly during assembly.

Schrade produced some lb7 knives with staglon handles like the lb8s use. You will find some in gift sets but they also made a few regular production. Also some lb8 knives with mickle silver bolsters. Of course the lb7 drop point knives too. I have a Herman Williams lb7 in my collection because it just seems appropriate, his knives are awesome. If you are lucky enough to find a proto and pre production example along with the dealer display you can have eight lb7's without any LTD or sfo or any of the other DU and so on.

James, I think you will find Schrade produced many LB8's with LB7 blades rather than t'other way round....the earliest of the staglon handled LB8's in the Dixie Series 1978/79 had LB7 blades and many of the staglon handled LB8's sparodically produced during late 1990's very early 2000 also had LB7 blades in addition to LB8 tang stampings.....Schrade simply used what it had at its disposal IMO....
I also have a very early LB7 4 pin which sat in a mid west hardware shop display for many years along with other Schrades....the side facing 'out' is very light and the side facing 'in' remains very dark and unfortunately also has a handle crack on the dark side which was always hidden...I'll have to dig it out and post a photo....not only the staglon handle Schrades faded quite dramatically in light/sunlight/shop window....Hoo Roo

Thanx Larry, didn't know the wood handles faded that bad. They are Honduran rosewood I believe. Don't know what the finishing process was. What displays or jobbers did you have in the store? I think the dixe set had it own serial#s. No? Schrade made another gift set with the lb7 staglon or lb8 with a 7 blade??? I want to say the gold rush set but I'm not sure. I say regular production because some are out there not part of these sets and serials. If you could set me straight on this that would be appreciated. Also like to know what the latest on codgers lb7 research if possible. I have two more serials# at my shop to add.

Schrade made lb7 and lb8's with square and round springs. Those changes don't seem to happen with tang stamps. I'm not sure if the blade change corresponded with the differant springs. If anyone knows??i did note the sears and camillus patterns I have, are with the double spring. Just after a quil look it don't seem like anything corresponded with much of anything. Lol.
