Learn to spot em! - Post 2004 Schrade Replica Knives

Thanks guys. I don't need pics now. I only have a few S-W in tubes, (lots without packaging) not enough to have known if the printing on the ends was always the "same".

Yet another timely heads up on these Taylor imports matched to surplus anniversary shields and tins.

TaylorSchrade.jpg

I've seen a couple of similar items for sale recently from less-than-upfront sellers.

Here is one that has been deconstructed. A spey blade, perhaps from a gardening knife (?) has replaced the master, or it has been re-ground, and a shield from the Schrade Cutlery Classics series, honoring American workmen, has replaced a (probably) missing shield. This shield was originally for a muskrat.

It kinda boggles my mind how these even come into existence. Who would take the time to do it? Seems to me you wouldn't make very much for your time. Maybe a fledgling knife customizer practice piece?

Schrade "FISHERMAN?" Looks suspiciously like an Electricians knife to me.

I have a couple of Schrades in the plastic tube somewhat like the one shown in the e-bay picture, they are model 272 and model 808.
However the back label on mine have the Ellenville address and the lifetime guarantee statement.
Inside they have sharpening instructions, however both of these knives feel like they have a very sharp factory edge.
Did Schrade always use this type of packaging?
If not does anyone know what year they changed packaging.
By the way thawk, good thread, it helps us novice collectors on what we should be on the look out for.
Best Regards
Bob Hunter

Your 272 and 808 packages are legitimate, as long as the knives are marked accordingly. They are actual Schrade patterns. The View Pack tubes showed up in the early 1960's and continued into the late 1970's I believe. It depended a lot on a particular pattern, as to how it was stamped and how it was packaged. They moved to something new when they ran out, it seems. The tubes gave way to the dark brown boxes. A few Old Timers like the 8OT, 34OT, and 108OT were packaged in tubes during the Schrade Walden years. Not sure there were ever any Uncle Henry's that were packaged in tubes, I think they were all boxed. The tube packaging was a mainstay of the Open Stock knives, as they are not commonly found in cardboard box packaging.

thawk,
The knives are marked accordingly, I want to thank you again for all your help.
I switched to a new computer system and my old camera is not compatible with my new system.
As soon as I able to take some pictures I'll try posting some and I would like to also take you up on your e-mail offer from the other thread.
Thanks again.
Best Regards

Glad to help, be sure and ask if you have any questions. I notice you are from Louisiana. Check old hardware stores down in that area. There are still old farm fresh Schrades lurking in old knife cases. Don't be bashful to ask them if you can dig around in the storage area.

When it comes to old, used Schrades (or any brand I reckon) on auction sites, it is like walking through a minefield. I've seen at least one seller who re-works old pocketknives... and that has given me pause. While he may be up front about what he does, it occurred to me that his buyers could flip those same knives WITHOUT disclosure. So I'm treading carefully. For now, I'm focusing on new old stock until I learn more. And yes, I've seen quite a few of those "old stock" without Ellenville or the Lifetime warranty. So again, I'm very grateful for all the information that is provided here!

Welcome to the forum AussieBosun. Might caution you that it is not within the forum "etiquette" to link to live auctions. You might get a reprimand. It's a Taylor contract knife post 2004. Made in the USA, by Camillus I believe.

That is a recently made knife. The valid Schrade-Walden knives were made from about 1947-72. The one you link to was made some time after 2004.

Cheers roland,my apologies on the link, the seller refers to it as being pre '73 in a round about way, thanks for your help, mark

Some times a Schrade comes along like this one. Stamped blade or no stamped blade - that is the question.
Most USA knives I have seen, are stamped "USA, or Schrade USA" et

Please refrain from posting links to current auctions as it is called "auction spotting" and is against BladeForums rules. Links should only be posted after auction is finished.
