Lemons: BK-16 Mod Discussion and Ideas : Completed Photo's

Another great looking 16. You should post up a group shot when your all done. Would be an impressive grouping...

Thank you Eero! I will definitely get a group shot when all done. Hopefully getting some new tongue oil today and am going to refinish all of them with that. Seems like a better solution than what I'm using now. Also maybe add a little patina to each of them.

Oh, and probably gonna make each a nice leather sheath.

Don't really know what to add to the conversation anymore. Once again: awesome, clean, nice, I like it.

Thank you G-shark!

Ok guys, so I have been playing around with some finishes the last couple of weeks and today I played around with some patinas.

I am a little upset that the tung oil I got was not really tung oil. Ugh..... Yea so the Minwax stuff that says TUNG OIL is not a real Tung oil?? Didn't know that till I already put a coat or two on my knives. I'm gonna see how well it works and it seems ok so far but eventually when I get the real deal I will most likely refinish them.

Anyway I have one more coat to put on tomorrow then I will apply a little wax and call it finished.

Here are a few pics of how they are looking now. I personally like patinas. I know some don't like them. But for me to actually use these knives, they need to have one so I am not trying to buff out every little stain on the blade. lol And they will start to get more character as I use them.

And incase someone wants to know, I used a hot apple cider vinegar soak (a few times) on the Chef and Lemonade then applied a little spicy mustard for some depth, and used only 2 applications of spicy mustard on the Bushcrafter.

And I was playing around with some brass black on the brass and copper pins, Eventually rubbed most off but some is still on there. Couldn't decide if I liked it or not. May do it once more before waxing.

I'll take two "lemonades" please, with a leather sheath. How much? LOL

Very nice! Sorry, I didn't read the whole thread, what wood did you use for the "Lemonade"?

Again, awesome work Dex. I think the Chef is still my fav, although I'm diggin' the thumb divots on the other two scales. The patinas turned out well. Three thumbs up!

Minwax tung oil isn't made with tung oil?? What the hell is this world coming to? Lol now I'm curious, what's in it?

That is a fine body of work, Dex. I like them all, but the Chef I like mostest. And the patina is awesome. Too bad they never stay that way.

Thank you guys! And I love the Chef the most too. It is unreal how good it feels in the hand. And I also think the wood is the prettiest of all three.

I am hoping to get some nice pics of all of them together sometime this weekend since I have completed all the finishing I am going to do.

And yes, Minwax's tung oil is something that is supposed to give you the look and feel of tung oil. And it says nowhere on the can what it contains or doesn't contain for that matter. There are reviews all over the internet of people who are absolutely P@#%$ Off about it. Don't know why that can't just say it on the can. I will probably send them an email cause no matter how good this stuff works, they have deceived the public and I will not be buying anymore of this product once I run out.

Oh, and your right Granite about the patinas never staying like that. It's a shame cause I have done some amazing patinas but they just don't last.

Wonder if it would be cool to get an absolutely beautiful patina then clear cerakote it or something so it will last?

Im not sure how well the clear cerakote will hold up once your really cutting into some stuff....But I bet a nice dark acid stonewash would look amazing on them and hold up pretty good.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this thread. Everyones thoughts and Ideas did play some part in the final outcome of each one of these blades.
There were some really awesome Idea's that I honestly probably would not have been able to come up with on my own.

Really Guys............... I would not have been able to do this and have these Blades turn out so amazing without your help, idea's, and motivation!!

This really was a lot of work but it was probably one of the most fun project's I have ever done. I hope to do more stuff like this in the future and I feel my skill level was really pushed to the next level because of this thread and all of you. I really didn't want to let y'all down so I tried to make each design the absolute best I possibly could with the skills and tools I had to work with.

I can't wait for some of you to hold and use these knives at Ethan's next month and really give me your honest opinion on how they look, feel in the hand, and perform.
We will see how many of the people that participated in this thread make it to the Gathering, and if more don't make it, then we may do a pass around.

Hopefully I will be able to make some of my own knives one day and I will probably start my designs off of these knives. That is how good I feel about the end result.

So thanks again guys, this was an awesome ride for sure!!

Dex
:D

Excellent pictures, makes me think i need a new camera or a better camera operator LOL really great shots!!

Awesome knives once again bud, cant wait to see your own creations as well.

Thank you worldwood! And the key to photography is to take many pictures! Back when I was doing B&W photography, I would take a whole roll of film knowing I would only get 2 or 3 great shots, So I would buy film in bulk and roll my own so I could take 5 to 10 rolls of film for what ever I was doing.

Now days with digital, it cost nothing to shoot hundreds of pics. haha. Crazy how times have changed. Good luck man and I'm sure it's the camera............. or the whisky. lol :)

I've totally enjoyed this thread and have to say, you've really done a spectacular job with these knives. Thanks for including everyone on your "journey". I am a compulsive modifier who has to tinker and tweak everything, and I applaud your effort. Really nicely done.

Thank you so much Creaky Bones! And I am like you too cause I have modded or changed in some way almost every thing I have bought in the last 15 years. lol
I am so glad that you and the other guys enjoyed this project as much as I did.

Dem pics... hubba hubba

Well said! Thanks G-Shark!

Yummy. My fav:

Thank you Warrior!! And I can't decide on a fav yet. lol

I have to agree with Warrior, the bushcrafter really hits the mark. The reshaping of the plunge, blade and sharpening choil together with the beautiful wood used for the scales sets the customizing bar very high.
