So shortly after the new year I received a package containing two more congress knives. These from our forumite Will (willgoy), who kindly sent them knowing that I'm a huge congress fan. Will - thanks so much and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to do this, I don't feel like I have time for anything these days...
The first, a Rough Rider. I have always been impressed with RR; they do fantastic jigged bone and their fit and finish is excellent. This one didn't disappoint. The blade combination is an interesting one
as you can see it has two pen blades, a spear and a sheepsfoot. I have quite a few congress patterns in various combinations but what tends to be a staple is this - if it has two blades of the same shape, they will most likely both be sheepsfeet (gr?). As is the norm. This is the first time I've seen two pen secondaries without two sheepsfoot mains.
It's a nicely done piece.
The second is another boker.
Boker really knows how to do this pattern, it's beautiful. Two sheepsfoot mains with a coping and a pen secondary. Gorgeous red jigged bone (why can't wrcase get bone like this?) which goes very well with the pattern.
This one celebrates a hundred and forty years of boker manufacturing - note the shield;
It's a lovely piece too and I have another boker of the same pattern with Grand Canyon jigged bone and a different blade etch.
What I particularly like about Boker's interpretation is the shape of the sheepsfoot blade. A great big spade of a blade with a lovely soft curve dropping down to the point, creating a very steep angle which allows the user to put a lot of pressure behind the cutting edge of the point in a way that you simply can't do with a wharncliffe.
I do like a good congress. Thanks again Will.
