LETS SEE THOSE MAGNIFICENT HARNESS JACKS

Here are a couple old HJs I picked up. The top one is a Schrade and the bottom one is a Shumate.

Great HJs, Philllll. Remarkable bone and condition.

Do you know anything about the Schrade? I wonder if that Holyoke Belt Co. was in Holyoke, MA? It's north of me, and was (and still is) a town with a system of canals running through it. Those canals powered wheels in very large and long factories. Holyoke was a factory town for textiles and paper--and probably machined parts like the rest of this area; before those industries moved south and then offshore. Volleyball was invented there (basketball in neighboring Springfield), and MacArthur was from neighboring Chicopee. Lots of history in that area. My son and I have kayaked in that area, near where the canals let out into the Connecticut River.

Robb, a little googling showed the Holyoke Belt Co mentioned in the Municipal Register of the city of Holyoke, MA from 1903. So there is a very good chance!

Here is one made by Canton Cutlery Co, based out of Canton, OH, which was in operation between 1879-1930. The blade still has the etch on it reading DASCO "CAR-VAN" STEEL. It looks like it has the factory edge on it, with some gorgeously jigged bone, and large, deep nail nicks. This is a very unique piece for me, as I have never seen a knife made by this cutler. Feast your eyes!

Oh Man - what a feast that is Evan - Wow...what a beauty - that knife truly deserves to be under the title of "Magnificent HJ"

Nice vintage HJs, Phil and Evan!

I think those Holyoke-marked HJs were supplied to belting customers, to make emergency repairs on industrial leather belting. They may have even been a purchaser premium, advertising the goods.

The Shumate might be a contract knife from Utica or Robeson.

Both very nice!

Dasco stands for Damascus Steel Corporation. Looks like they got knives from Canton, to advertise their products.

I think this belong here even if I posted it in separate thread, Clauss cutlery, made by Caes sometimes between 1920-1940.
As Charlie wrote to me GEC #66 is identical in size.
