That formula is "N+1".The right number of harness jacks is always 1 more than you have currently. Actually I think that’s actually true with knives in general.
It also applies to:
bicycles.
fountain pens.
socks.
archery arrows/bolts.
blowgun darts.
slingshot/sling ammo. (steel/lead/glass/clay balls)
boxes of ammo for each firearm you own.
targets for whatever shooting sport(s) you participate in.
fishing tackle; lures/jigs/flies, etc.
Mountain Dew Soda. (can, bottle, or two liter)
Warm clothing if you reside or visit where it is currently cold.
remaining minutes of health and "life".
remaining hours before planned obsolescence affects your computer/tablet/"smart"phone/TV.
