Mountainsmith Lariat 65

Just got back from a 35 mile trip with about 35-40 lbs riding in the pack and it was very comfortable the whole time. No complaints at all and I don't plan on replacing this one any time soon.

It's a top loader, but it also has a zippered panel access which is great for accessing stuff sacks in the bottom of the pack. Detachable day pack/ summit pack can also hold a hydration bladder.

Nice CCMI, A few weeks back i was looking at a friends Mountainsmith Falcon 55, i was considering it for long backpacking but all the stitches looked weak in it and wasnt double stitched on any straps so i was concerned with tearing at the straps. does yours have decent stitching? my main concern is where the straps connect. i carry alot of weight and was worried they would tear. hows yours?

To be honest I haven't looked it over with a fine toothed comb to check all the stitching. I can say that having it fully loaded with 40 lbs on the trip I was never worried about the stitching and I didn't notice any weakness. Felt solid to me.

I can try to look it over a little more closely tonight and let you know.

Thanks, you have a different model so it might be different anyway but im really only worried about where the straps connect. I really liked the shape, size and feel of his and the only thing that stopped me at the time was the stitching, i could of got it for 55 bucks which is great i thought as it was barely used and in perfect shape but already the end of the stitch on 1 was loose and very weak thread used. maybe that 1 was defective and thats why he was selling it lmao.

Damn, came in today. Glad I didn't pay the extra $10 to have it shipped priority. For the extra $10, it was supposed to get here either tomorrow, or Saturday.

Dubz, I hope you like it. Definitely makes a difference.

Hooked the Proteus up to the Falcon II. The Proteus is empty, but, I can't say I like the way it feels on me. I think I'm just too damn big for this pack. Now it feels like the pack is pushing down hard on the waist pack, making it uncomfortable around my waist. I may end up trading this setup for something different.

EDIT: Stuffed a few t-shirts into the Proteus. Made it better, but still not overly comfortable. I have the shoulder straps as tight as they'll go on my Falcon II. I feel it's putting too much weight on the waist pack.

I'm not as big as you are (6'2, 200 lbs) but I had a similar problem with the Falcon II - I'm guessing the torso length is just too short for you.

It's not inexpensive, but I'd recommend looking at the Camelbak TriZip (or if you have the $$$ go for the actual Mystery Ranch version). The adjustable Mystery Ranch harness is just about perfect imo. It's probably the most comfortable pack I own.

You can get one for right around $200, but it's really not that much more than the cost of the Falcon II + the Proteus. For quite a bit less, you could also look at the Kelty MAP 3500. I know Murph has posted pics of his and says he loves it, so maybe he can fill you in on the torso length.

Yeah, Murph loves his Kelty MAP 3500. I was also looking at the Camelbak Linchpin. I think the tri-zip is a pretty decent size bag, is it not? I was looking at more of a day pack size.

I'm not sure how to measure the torso length of the pack, just measure the backpanel? I can do that here soon. The MAP3500 is great, I've owned three of them, there's a reason for that. I also have a MR 3 day tr-zip that I scored slightly used here, it's an awesome ruck too!

True. Linchpin is listed as 32.5L (1984 cu in) and the TriZip is listed as 34L (2075 cu in) but I believe those figure include 3L for the 100 oz bladder (which is included with the packs and runs $30+ separately).

The Falcon II is listed as 25L (1520 cu in) not sure if they include the zippered water bladder compartment in that figure (bladder not included). No idea the volume the Proteus adds.

Really, my TriZip will cinch down pretty dang small and compact if I only need it for a daypack. The Linchpin might have a little better organization since it has separate compartments. The TriZip has a couple small pockets inside and an admin pocket on the side, but is mostly a big open space inside (which I like for my purposes).

Not my pic but shows a size comparison with the TAD Fastpack in between...

Hmmm.......

Damn I wish there were a local place I could try where I could try these on for size.

I think this might be a little overboard, but I'm gonna give it a try ;)

I'm afraid it might clash with my pink crocs?

I just measured my torso, it's 19". On the MAP 3500 -I have zero issues, but the torso length is adjustable via the shoulder straps top adjustment.
