A quick question about leather sheaths: Do you guys keep your knives elsewhere, when not carrying them? Or is D3V sufficiently corrosion resistant that it doesn’t matter?
Here’s a text I just sent a customer the other day.. I could talk A LOT more on the subject (cuz I’m like that) but this is an abbreviated version..

Leather causing rust is a wives tail based in truth. Any sheath, Kydex, leather or fabric can cause rust if not properly cared for. It’s not the sheath it’s changes in humidity. As long as the storage environment is dry and stable you won’t get rust.

Any time you have your knife outside, say when it’s 90 degrees, then you bring it in the air conditioned house, condensation forms. Same goes I winter being out where it’s cold and coming in to the heat.. If not properly stabilized that can cause rust. Same can be said for storing things in a basement or attic..

I have a 1095 knife I got in 1980 for Boy Scouts that has been in its sheath in my gun safe for 30 years and it looks no different than when I put it away.

I’ve been lied to! For years I’ve believed that leather will, in effect, *gather* moisture from the atmosphere that will, in time, make its way to the blade.

In my experience “conventional wisdom” is more conventional than wise 😉

For thousands of years the ONLY sheath material was leather, and knives rust.. especially under the circumstances I mentioned earlier. Kydex has been around for sheaths since the mid-late 90’s, turn of the century before it was mainstream.

If leather attracted moisture think how many soaking wet couch cushions we’d have 😁
