Let's see your GEC #74 Mustangs

I dig the different shades, complete with "nail hole."

Isn't that likely to be an actual nail hole? I thought these covers came from old barn wood (a lovely choice!). Either way, you got a good one for sure! :)

My Mustang came in today. I threw it up next to my Viper for a couple of quick comparison shots:

The edges of the covers are much more rounded on my Viper, but the two knives are virtually identical in thickness -- which surprised me, because the Viper has smooth covers whereas the Mustang has jigged bone. I'm used to jigged covers being thicker than smooth covers.

I've got an orange Delrin version coming, and as I went in with mixed feelings about this jigging style I expected to like this one less than I do; I figured I'd wind up selling this one. But the bone feels outstanding in-hand, I love the way the curves match the shape of the handle, and the smoky color turned out great.

Now I don't know what to do!

Hi everyone,
I just got mine in and love the size and shape. I did notice that mine has multiple black "marks" on both sides, that really throw off the look. This is my first gec knife, so I may be a bit unknowledgeable and over picky in my anticipation. Is this normal, or am I justified in feeling a little disappointed with the look? I did contact the seller, but just wanted others' more knowledgeable opinions here in the mean time. Thanks in advance.

Thanks! I was assuming it was an actual nail hole, as it's perfectly round - seems man made. I put it in quotes to avoid looking too foolish should anyone know better!

It's groovy Man!
I thought the same thing...in fact, said the same thing in another thread.

As mentioned above they're made from old barn wood, which may include nail holes and other imperfections. I think yours is pretty sweet!

Sir Charles, I agree with Nature Boy, I love the imperfections but if they weren't expected I understand your uncertainty. If stock is out when and if you opt to return, I would gladly exchange with you when mine arrives? That is if mine is without character marks:o:)

Thanks for your input. I do understand that it came from old wood, and am really loving it in hand. I just can't seem to get over the "black sharpie" marks that I initially thought was on the knife when I first pulled it out of the tube.

Thanks for the input and offer Paul. I really do appreciate it. I'll keep your offer in mind, but probably just try to live with it if the vendor is out of stock, to save the hassle. Again, the feel in hand is unlike anything I have. I really don't have a whole lot of knives, but I finally understand why gec is so highly praised. This shape is truly something I'd like to edc over my modern knives, and making me a believer of traditionals. I have been trying to edc the few traditionals i do have, but always end up carrying my modern knives more often than not. This will be my turning point I guess. We'll see how it all turns out. Charles, I would love to have your knife. I think you got the cream of the crop. Those marks really make it, IMO.

Thanks Harry,
That's a great way to look at it. Everyone else loving it so much, makes me feel a little silly. Should I just give in to the peer pressure?[emoji41]

ditto this.. that one is the crème de la crème.
Thanks everyone for the feedback on the handles. I just received word back from the seller that I won't be able to exchange it for another, since he has no more in stock (great customer service btw). I guess I'll be learning to love this one. At least I'll know that mine is unique in its own way. I really appreciate everyone's time and honest feedback. Did I mention that I love this pattern, and am really excited to carry it! We're bonding already:

Enjoy it! You can demand perfection your next GEC, or the one after, or the one after...

Wow !!! I agree !!! The nail marks make it special.

Give in.

I doubt that those are nail holes. Probably worm holes. Ever heard of "wormy Chestnut"?

I think you are correct Bob...I had a butler table made for my parents wedding anniversary of wormy chestnut and wild cherry. Wood was from the hills of east Tennessee. Pretty sure those are worm holes ......

Not nail holes....worm holes and highly sought after wormy chestnut wood. Probably around 100 year old wood.

Ahhh...that makes more sense, size-wise. Very cool. That's for clearing that up.
