Let's see your GEC #74 Mustangs

I think that is the best one I have seen yet!!! Love the wormholes. I will gladly trade you for a plain one!?

Did I mention that I love this pattern, and am really excited to carry it! We're bonding already:

Add mine to the chorus of voices loving the character of your #74's covers! I love character in a knife handle, and yours has a tremendous amount of character. I'm glad you're bonding with it, and this is a great picture to boot. :)

Does anyone recall why GEC made the 74 when it is so similar to the 73 in shape? I think I read the reason someplace and now I cant recall.

Can't wait to meet my chestnut 74 after work. It got lost in the mail yesterday, but shows as "Out for Delivery" today.

Thanks again everyone for the praises on the knife. Thanks also to ramrod for the offer. It was explained to me that those marks are stabilized worm holes. I would never have guessed it. I guess beauty really is in the eye of the knife holder.

First post.

I've been a fan of GEC for a while and here are my #74s - no Elk but a little surprise. The Chestnut I think are nail holes, I read the posts and I don't think they are worm holes. I was surprised too when it came thinking they were marks from a Sharpie but the are filled in nicely and the Chestnut is going to replace my EDC of the last few years, a Tidioute 792213 - not that it needs replacing but just because. I am also surprised at how similar in size the Tidioute is to the Mustang I guess it just works for me.

BigJim2x - You picked out a really nice "surprise" 74 there. Nice pics.

Could be powder post beetles that made those holes and grooves. They are still gnawing on the chestnut beams in my 165 yr old barn!

i thought it was only the 15s with reclaimed chestnut. I'm glad they made it onto the 74s as well. These have great character! Sort of like primitive bone for wood.

All the American Chestnut handle material is Reclaimed. They have used it before. There is also a whole series of KaBar's made by CSC that used it.

I personally really like this wormy chestnut, although technically speaking, worms did not make the holes, insect larvae did and they aren't really worms. At any rate, the Mustang I received has several holes. The spacing and size definitely doesn't look like nail holes to me, unless there was a really cut rate carpenter banging on it.

These covers prove without a doubt that the chestnut has been stabilized. All of the holes are filled, in fact, I'm certain the wood is completely impregnated with an epoxy. During stabilization, the wood is left in a vacuum container which forces the epoxy into all of the voids. I used to make knife scales using professionally stabilized wood and it resembles some of that quite closely.

I'll get some pictures up this weekend. Hope everyone is enjoying theirs! Nice to see all of the pictures!

Hi everyone,
I just got mine in and love the size and shape. I did notice that mine has multiple black "marks" on both sides, that really throw off the look. This is my first gec knife, so I may be a bit unknowledgeable and over picky in my anticipation. Is this normal, or am I justified in feeling a little disappointed with the look? I did contact the seller, but just wanted others' more knowledgeable opinions here in the mean time. Thanks in advance.

Best one yet. On my Canal Street knives with reclaimed chestnut I searched far and wide to get those worm holes.

Good Post Steve! Personally, I think "worm holes" sounds slightly more appealing than "insect larvae holes" :)

Hey Big Jim hope you don't mind.:) I thought I would help you out a little on posting your beautiful 74's. These are 3 beautiful knives my friend. I would say this is definitely an outstanding 1st post. Welcome to the porch. :D

BigJim2x, that is a beautiful trio of knives! Picking up one of the ivory models was a great choice! I think these will be highly sought after.

For reclaimed cover materials, I think character marks are intentional and more desirable. But it's very subjective. Companies like Pottery Barn and Restoration hardware add artificial character marks to make their stuff look antique.

My 74 is waiting for me at the post office box. Sooo close... ;)
