Thank you for that info. For the foreseeable future I'm just going to work on the handle.Joe,
There's plenty of handle there to remove some and refinish. Looks like the bottom guard may have been bent/rounded as well.

Nice photo Sir.![]()
No Deer sounds like my Son up North, there's literally 100's in this area. Thanks, I wasn’t seeing any deer so taking and editing this pic occupied a little bit of my time lol.
Absolutely incredible knife and photo Jake, although I'm starting to get used to it. I no longer hunt but I lived in a climbing stand for about 20 yrs. My secret to success - after the climb and settling in, I went to sleep.

Your fixed blades are spectacular.
I recently got this Western W49 at a great price and figured it was a total reclamation project based on the seller's photos. I didn't get a sheath however. It's actually much better than I thought. The handle has been 'preserved' with an unknown coating and the blade was hit with grinder near the tip on one side but not enough to ruin it. I have enough experience with antiques that I feel comfortable removing the preservative. If I go slow, I should be okay.
According to the date code it is from 1980 when the Platts family still owned the company. It was manufactured in Boulder, CO.View attachment 1015841 View attachment 1015842
