Let's see your good old basic fixed blades, Bowie's, Stickers, etc.

I recently got this Western W49 at a great price and figured it was a total reclamation project based on the seller's photos. I didn't get a sheath however. It's actually much better than I thought. The handle has been 'preserved' with an unknown coating and the blade was hit with grinder near the tip on one side but not enough to ruin it. I have enough experience with antiques that I feel comfortable removing the preservative. If I go slow, I should be okay.
According to the date code it is from 1980 when the Platts family still owned the company. It was manufactured in Boulder, CO.IMG_6386~2-1024x546.JPG IMG_6387~2-1024x588.JPG

Joe,

There's plenty of handle there to remove some and refinish. Looks like the bottom guard may have been bent/rounded as well.

Thanks, I wasn’t seeing any deer so taking and editing this pic occupied a little bit of my time lol.
No Deer sounds like my Son up North, there's literally 100's in this area.:p Do you use a camera or a cell phone camera?

Absolutely incredible knife and photo Jake, although I'm starting to get used to it. I no longer hunt but I lived in a climbing stand for about 20 yrs. My secret to success - after the climb and settling in, I went to sleep. :D When I awoke... there was a reckoning... :D
Your fixed blades are spectacular.

Thank you so much. Josh is excellent to work with and is making some really nice blades. As for the climbing stand, that’s how I mostly hunted also, or out of fixed stands. Still hunting is what I do almost exclusively now, but I still sneak in a nap sometimes :)

Very nice, Alan.

Your post reminded me that my wife got me an old W49 a number of years ago as a father's day gift. Complete with its battered leather sheath even. I will need to dig it out for some pictures.

I love those mods. I always found the W49 to be a rather bulky and chunky knife and have thought that it would be a great canvas for some sensible modifications. I really like what I see in your picture.
