Man that's got some age to it Jack, it wouldn't surprise me if that was stepping up to be the big 100, mind you it depends on where and how it was kept too - it could only be half that, but I do think its a very old knife!
I too would have removed the tape my friend.
I'm really in two minds about this one. On the one hand I think that forged drop-point blade can be used to make a great user, on the other hand, in it's current form, this knife has some history to it. Who knows what purpose it was made for, and what circumstances surround it. I can think of any number of scenarios.
Is the stirrup a lanyard bail?
No, it fits the contours of the wood. I thought at first that it was probably holding together a broken handle, but it appears to be a primitive skull-crusher or at least something which could be used for light hammering or to allow the knife itself to be hammered. Despite its fearsome looks, there's virtually no edge on it at all, and I think someone had had it in their tool-box for a long-time (the guy I bought it from bought it with a load of old tools).
