Let's see your good old basic fixed blades, Bowie's, Stickers, etc.

I picked this up in the market today, thought it looked like a prop from the Gangs of New York film! I figured the wrap was leather when I first spotted it, but it’s actually just dirty tape. Not sure what I should do with it now; start a Black Museum, give it to the police to check against unsolved crimes, or make it into a user. It’s certainly got some character, whatever its history.

Looks like an old kitchen knife mate!

If it were mine I'd give a light clean to the blade to make in sanitary, knock off the handle (even though it does look cool I don't reckon it'll fiar too fine as a user..) and fit some simple dark wood scales and get preparing some dinner! ;)

Or send it to me.. :D

That's a sinister looking blade you've got there jack! I like it!

I think I would use it as a "practice knife" for knife making/modding.

I'm not sure how home-made it is. The wooden handle pre-dates the tape, and the copper stirrup I guess, but that's not the original handle as the exposed tang shows. The tang has a slight beak at the end, like you might get on a kitchen knife. Whenever it was re-handled, it must have been a fair while ago. The pics don't show just how deep the patina is, but the blade is actually black, and while I reckon the steel is decent, it's a long time since it's had an edge on it.

My own thoughts would be to gently clean off the rust, sharpen it up to make sure the steel's OK. Then maybe wrap the handle with leather, make a simple sheath, and keep it as a scalping knife! ;)

Isn't it?! Thanks :)

There's nothing basic about that beauty Double Ott

I would have to take it apart enough to see what they were doing with the tape and copper.
Let us see it when you're done. I expect it will make an excellent light sheath knife.

You've chanced upon two really nice fixed blades recently JB. Nice.

Let me know what your plans are if you wanna re-handle the 'Gangs' blade (and give it some pants?). I have a well stocked box of scales/handle blocks ;)

My Blind Horse Knives Patch Knife finally winged its way across the Atlantic this week, it's been sat on my hip in the house while I've been bumbling around the kitchen and such. Rated by my least knife-friendly friend as "It was intimidating... until you took it out of the sheath."

Apologies for the less-traditional content in some of the photos.
