Lets see your Patinas!

This is from when I was experimenting with patinas. I put two chunks of lemon on each side of the blade and left them there overnight. The smell was terrible! I got a kind of black finish very similar to the decarb you get when heat treating knife blades and didn't really like it at all. I never realized I could just lightly sand it off. Well yesterday I grab the Trapper and take some 1000 grit paper to it and viola! The black coating is gone and I was left with a very interesting pattern. I seems the acid from the lemon actually ate away at the steel and left a pattern sort of similar to damascus. You can actually feel the tiny dips in the steel if you run your fingernail across it.

Wow! That looks like it's a hundred years old!

Here are a few of mine:

oooh, I can play this game

this one is a german eye brand that I got ahold of a while back, it has been in my pocket for a while, the patina looks almost exactly the same as when i got it (but the edges have a lot more shine)

and this is a case cheetah that has a forced patina (that I have changed a few times, I stuck it in an onion overnight, which caused it to pick up the layer pattern

Don't worry, I'm takin' great care that Swayback Jack, it's got a very dark patina on it I'll have to take a pic tomorrow when the sun comes out so ya can see how the patina's progressing, I carry this knife every day, it's become a favorite and it's also become my worry stone, thanks again for turning me onto a great pattern.

does anyone else have lots of fiunger print patina? my GEC bullnose has it forming quite nicely and it looks good :)

If I notice a fingerprint that's starting to tarnish in place, I try my best to remove it. For some reason, I don't like my prints being etched onto things. Maybe it's a mental scar from my misspent youth... ;)

Definitely yes. My patina changes constantly, including from my fingers.

After I wipe the blade with alcohol (possibly the best way to reveal the most colors), my young Pemberton looks like this:

Let's bump this awesome thread to the top. There are some stellar looking blades in here! Love the looks of that Case Swayback, B Hess!

Here's one of my Opinels (n°7). At first I polished it, but have just used it a lot since. Mainly for food (prepping and eating). It got somewhat dull from cutting food in ceramic plates, so it needed a sharpening. And what an edge this guy takes... And so quickly . Love the contrast with the patina and the sharpened edge at the moment. I thought I'd share.
