Let's see your Scout/Camp knives

I never had much use for or respect for “Scout Knives” as a kid. The kids who had them usually couldn’t keep them sharp, and either had Kamp Kings (hated them after I broke nails trying to open them and cut myself bad sharpening one) or a very few official scout knives. More actually had SAKs, but by the time I got my hands on one of those to look at, I was completely soured on the pattern - the spear blade bothered me, and you usually didn’t get a small blade. I did a *lot* of whittling and carving as a kid, so they weren’t my pattern.

What I didn’t know ... I love SAKs today, and respect the Camp Knife pattern greatly as a practical every day pocket tool box. If I need to whittle, I’ll just carry two knives or figure out how to whittle better with the SAK.

These two are the only non-SAK Scout or Camp knives I’ve ever owned.

The camp pattern I got from an auction, or from a used knife display (I don’t really remember) but it was clearly loved and used a lot by a prior owner. I rarely carry it now that I am no longer a scout leader.

I do carry a camp knife pattern daily, though: usually an 07 Vic Soldier, or a much older and well-loved Tinker.

hey waynorth waynorth , I have a chance to look over some scout knives a a co-worker acquired (she buys and sells things she finds at yard sales and flea markets) and I was wondering if I should for anything rare? Anything I should be looking for by some of the old companies? I know most companies had a scout style knife At one point. Was looking over her tang stamps of yours above.

Charlie, that bottom one with the sheeps foot is interesting. I can’t make out the stamp though. Hammer?
Yes, a Hammer Brand!! The blade is etched, but it's hard to see in this pic!!

Rare is hard to identify without seeing them first. 😉
I'd look for old-looking knives in first class condition, made in USA, Germany and Britain. Other European countries also!!

got s chance to look at them, most were just pocket knives in general, some in well worn out conditions, broken blades, sharpened a lot, I did pick up three I liked. An old all metal camp knife like the US kind but not marked as such, has a stud to open the can opener/screwsdriver, a neat wooden one with a cool shield, still have to try and get pliers to pen the main blade, and a stockman, maybe Camillus, looks like a Craftsman. I will post pics when can.

This Keen Kutter came in yesterday's mail. Haven't even given it a basic cleanup, yet. The awl blade, not a punch, is amazing. Have never seen one like it on a US-made scout. Model number is 6659.
