Let's see your Scout/Camp knives

When you say no awl is that because that pattern came without.
Yes, this Camillus pattern came without the awl. If this had an awl, it would never leave my pocket! I tend to gravitate more towards my Vic Pioneer or Farmer because, for me, the awl is so useful.

I'm a big fan of an awl as I mentioned many times,it is such a useful tool,I was using the awl on my 86hj to chip the ice out of the base of the windshield wipers and it was below 30 that I used it and put in my work coat full of snow hung coat in basement and 6 months later the rust and bone looked good enough to pass on to a buddy lol.nice if gec put out a camp or knife with a good awl17534708248471262045489811430884.jpg Again I think this was last pattern with an awl,the awl got a bit scratched up from digging weeds from the cracks of my walkway. But I always look for an awl Knife.

They did, but it was the length of a Scottish claymore. 🤣🤣🤣

Those are great. Knives,I had a deal to bye a camp knife from one seller on aa#k but he didn’t ship to canada so there was another person selling a camp knife that would consider shipping to Canada,so I arranged for the first guy to ship to second guy and then second guy ship both to me,that was until he quoted me shipping lol.it would of came to 450.00 cnd for what you guys find for 30 bucks.

It's kind of sad that no one has continued with the making of the traditional scout/camp knife,it went from thousands being made to a few hundred every 5 years or so,as much as I like sak knives it just doesn't have the old vibe,is it the screw cap that was it's downfall lol.

Fantastic collection! They’re really well made knives.
They really were well made. Camillus used the 5779 pattern for them, which was something like the 3rd or 4th generation of scout pattern for Camillus.

Some people complain that the pulls were a little light, but I think they were just fine. When the back spring keeps the open tool from closing, and also holds the tool closed, the rest is just gravy. My finger nails certainly appreciate the lighter pulls.

As an aside, the 5779 pattern was used for many different scout knives. The Camillus 99 was a mainstay for the company, but they also made scout knives from this pattern for the BSA, KABAR, Case, the AG Russel Premium Scouts, and probably a hundred others that I can’t remember.

But truthfully, the saw scouts were the best of the bunch. The tooling was at its best at this time, and the fit and finish was very consistent as well. I’ve handled a couple dozen of them, and they were all quite excellent.

Oh, one more thing. The Remington R-4 saw scouts came in a couple of different packages. You could get it in a cardboard box, but they also offered a deluxe wooden box that came with the knife, a belt buckle and a honing steel.

Mine came in a cardboard box. I got it years ago. I like the light pulls as well. They’re smooth opening knives. I always liked the A.G. Russell Scouts. I never got one though. I think I got a Benchmade AFCK instead😂! I have another Camillus Scout. I gave it to my oldest son when he was a kid. He’s grown now and has his own place, but I think he left most of his older knives, here at our home. I’ll look tomorrow, after work, and see if I can find it. If so, I’ll post it!

Rough Ryder, BTI (offshore manufactured) Old Timer & Schrade, and (offshore made) Marbles, Still make them. Böker has one in their Magnum line, equipped with Rosewood covers. I don't know if Mikov still produces one. Marbles has (or had ... I've not checked availability this year.) two large Scout/Camp knives, about the same size as Charlie's Texas Camp Knife (2 examples shown above this page).
1 with bone covers, with Dave Canterbury's name, the other has orange & black G10 covers.
I bought the one with G10.

A great knife. I highly recommend ... provided you like a large knife.
Closed length of the two Marbles - not counting the bail - is over 4.25 inches. 😇👍

Some of the Rough Ryders have one of the various 1900's to WW2 era can openers, rather than the current "Safety" can openers used on the Demo Knives ... can opener, and post WW2 Scout/Camp knives. Some variation of the RR are also equipped with the safety can opener.

Damn. I just looked up the Marbles. That is a huge one at 4.25" long. Looks absolutely massive.

My only other scout that is truly oversized is from the Camillus Classic Cartridge Series. It's beefy, not massive. But it's really long. 4 7/8" closed.

I almost forgot the Marbles MR278 ... (even tho I have two + gave away 1... 🙄)
Not a Scout/Camp knife per se ... but the same class. The MR278 is the same as the issue "Demo" knife with a couple minor changes:
1) Match strike pulls.
2) No "CAN OPENER" stamp on that tool.
3) About 1/8" shorter closed (not counting the bail) than my 1975 issue Demo Knife made by Western.
(I don't have an issue Camillus/Imperial/Colonial to compare my Western to, so, I don't know if the Western is shorter or longer closed)

The Marbles retains the "strong enough to pull a Jeep" bail.
At well under $10.⁰⁰ it is a super dooper bargain.
Also, the can opener works better than the one on my c.1980 Ulster "Official BSA" Scout/Camp, (off shore) Old Timer Scout/Camp, and Böker Magnum Scout/Camp.

The China made West German Cold War era "GAK" is another worth consideration.
Compared to the original made by Mauser (among others) the only difference is the China made is 110mm closed, compared to 111mm for the German made.
The wood saw works great, and comes with a clip on cover for the saw blade for when using the bottle opener and flat blade screw driver on the tip end of the saw, and the file on the side of the saw. The only potential negatives: (1) No can opener. (2) Punch is a back side tool, like on most VIC/Wenger SAK's with a punch.

I had two. One resided in my bike/trike's trunk bag. I believe a resident here "borrowed" it without my knowledge or permission, about 18 to 27 months before he became a former resident. As far as I know, he is still on the census. ☹️
I loaned the replacement to a friend down the hall. I was supposed to get it back when he passed. (along with some other knives he had and the top end VIC pliers based multi Tool that I didn't inherit early, when he passed. The facility owner decided she (or her hubby or son) needed them more than I do, and claimed they could not find them when they cleaned out his room after he passed. (He had no surviving family.)
I "need" to get another one. 🤨
