Let's see your Scout/Camp knives

Look at the condition of this scout-type utility knife!!! Schrade Cut Co!!!Ute scout 1.jpgUte scout 2.jpgUte scout 3.jpg
I don't see any real wear, except some light signs of blade rub!! Old style can opener, and Schrade's great punch blade, but no shield . . . . . .
I wonder if it was an issue knife, or a PX knife??? Beauty regardless of what it is; sitting in one of my cigar boxes, I haven't seen it for years, and can't remember where I got it!! I hope it's not CRS kicking in!!!
It's like getting a new knife for my collection!!! 😁

Watch your Camillus Boy Scout knives!!!! I found this one in my collection tonight, safely tucked into one of those Sack-Ups. Thankfully, it didn't affect any of the other knives in the roll. I would have sworn that the covers were made of Delrin, but they’ve apparently begun to off-gas? When this knife went in the roll, it was in mint condition.

Even stranger, none of the blades are affected. Just the nickel silver bolsters and brass liners.

This isn’t even a comparatively old knife. The blades are stainless steel.

Covers are delrin. Delrin doesn't offgas.
Is that surface oxidation or are the bolsters plated? You sure they are nickel silver?
What is going on with the brass liners?
Did you use any sort of lubricant or rust protection on it?

Well, the knife is pretty well cleaned up for now. I had to use 2000 grit wet/dry paper to remove the weird crud. Then a Scotch-Brite pad to brush the finish. Then some Simichrome polish to polish the bolsters. I’m sure there’s still probably more crud between the covers and brass liners (liners looked the same as the bolsters), but there’s no way to get to that. Really strange. The crud sanded right off the NS bolsters and brass liners. No pitting.

The only other thing that is out of the ordinary about this knife is the color of the Delrin. It’s strangely light in comparison to my other Camillus BSA knives. I usually only see this amount of fading on the mark side; due to light exposure on a display model. But the pile side is just as bad. Check the picture below; my problem knife next to another factory fresh Camillus BSA from the same era.

Maybe they just did a bad job of dying the Delrin on this one particular knife? Or maybe they weren’t able to source real Delrin for this run, and had to find something from another manufacturer. Or possibly they used a different dye for the Delrin on this run, and the dye is presenting problems years later. Either way, I won’t be exposing this knife to the rest of my collection.

I tend to agree. I think half of my knife collection maybe be scouts.
It's wild how many were made at turn of the century up until about 50 years ago compared to now, come on knife makers let's get back at it and make some scout/camp knives
It's hard to beat those old scouts!!! This nice full, barely used Camillus is a great example of the breed!!!
Sadly acquired from the estate of a friend/collector who passed away too young!!! R.I.P. Brian!!Sorenson Camillus 1.jpg

Well said, Charlie! I have a couple of knives from Brian's collection waiting for me at my son's place in Wisconsin.
A stunning collection of Scouts to say the least Charlie! Outstanding! I could spend a day looking over that group.

Charlie I am really sorry to hear of the loss of your friend Brian :(, 58 is so so young :(
The knives will remind us of a missing Man at the Oregon Knife Show!!!
