Thanks Bugdoc Bugdoc This 1973 Small Trapper is the last vintage Case that I have to show. I actually returned the Grand Daddy; it was just too big for me to carry. I do have a few current Case models from the early years of this milenium. I think they stack up to the old ones pretty well and will post them next.

And yes, I was the one who told you about the art boxes. Did you stain your box? I just rubbed mine down with some wood wax and lined the drawers with brown paper. It works great and cost so little.

Leslie, thanks for sharing your Cases. I must start looking for some.

My box has a clear sealer on it so I left it as is. I did line the drawers with rubberized mesh liner in light gray. It's almost full so I'll be needing to get another. (I noticed they sell out quickly.) It's on top of my 2-drawer file cabinet, where it makes a perfect base for my humidor.

My understanding is that the rough black synthetic covers are a replica of the synthetic "gum fuddy" covers Case started using during WWII when natural materials were harder to obtain. Thanks guy's I have 8 knives that Glenn has modded for me 7 in stag 1 in mammoth ivory and that sodbuster turned out to be the cream of the crop.

I took a comparison shot of many of my 18 pattern Case Medium Stockman pattern pocketknives not too long ago. This is a selection of knives over 40 years (most late 1970's and early 1980's). I do have one modern Gumfuddy copy, the 18 pattern on the far right. What was interesting to me was to see how much metal width the main blades have lost over the years - modern ones (expect for the Pocket Worn Old Red - not pictured) are visibly narrower - more apparent when you compare the 1975 next to the 2015. OH

This 18 dates from the early 2000’s, and it is a good one. I really like the skinny California clip, but that is a personal preference. I can see why some would not like it. The action on this one is excellent, and the blades open all the way. I cannot fault this knife, except for a little blade rub which does not bother me in a stockman.

I picked it up from Vincent Mazzei who refurbished it and put a satin finish on the bolsters and blades. It is a great EDC knife. The 18’s are a perfect size.

I have almost gone through my small
Case knife collection in this thread. Time to buy another one!! I have no choice....

I notice the "fully open" blade is more common on the new Case 18 pattern - old ones are more likely to open at an angle - the most extreme I have is that 1975 in the lower photo (a punch variation - don't think that makes a difference though). Of course in using the Case 18 pattern nearly daily over the years I find it makes no difference whatsoever in usefulness and I only notice it when I'm in my "collector" role as opposed to being in the "user" role. OH
