Lets talk GEC!

Agree, although I can’t see how the 35 knife could generate this level of collector interest. Who is going to want to buy a used one ?

The BSA legal action has been a big factor in creating scarcity of the beer scout.

Of note too, even with the high prices that beer scouts are now fetching they still aren’t the most expensive or rarest of the GEC knives.

I wasn’t around to get in on the beer scouts. Hard to believe a carbon steel knife with 100s made can fetch such a price. I’d rather go custom. Once GEC releases another cap lifter I think the craze will weaken some. That’s when I will plan to try and get one for a reasonable price. I don’t blame folks for cashing in though. Better do it while you can.

It is hard for me to compare my 47s and my 93s . The 47s have a Wharncliffe and a Pruner blade and my 93s have a Lambfoot and a Ramfoot blade . The 47 is actually a 74 with the blade on the other side for a Reverse Curved handle . If a 47 had a Sheepfoot Blade , it could be very nice . I have never found a Wharncliffe blade to be very useful to me . To some it is . If I did not have 2 of the 47 pattern in my collection , I would try to get some . IMHO the 93s that I have are more useful knives than the 47s that I have . But I have to tell you that the 47 Pruner , and pruner blades are useful , has some of the best Stag that I own on it and I will not use it because of that .

Harry

I appreciate your insight. I do share your opinions on the wharncliff blade. I have a few traditional folders with a wharncliff and I find the blade tip too fragile. I love the ramsfoot blade on my 93, and I dont have a lambsfoot but I want to try one badly. I might pass on the 47s than unless they produce one with a lambsfoot or sheepsfoot blade. Cheers!

Harry, I don’t know if the Farm & Field line is your cup of tea, but they did make some F&F #47’s with a sheepsfoot.

Well the market is speaking...the prices realized for Beer Scouts on the big auction site this past weekend were pretty large...so a flood of Beer Scouts and Crown Lifters are coming up for sale. The prices already bid are pretty high, even on one that is described as basically new but is clearly lacking its etch. I'm planning on passing on the Beer & Sausage Knife...if it follows the path of the BSK, flippers will be rejoicing.

I've been watching the clownshow unfold myself, pretty insane honestly.

I've been away from the game for maybe two years now, GEC's were fetching a premium back then, but now...I just took a swim in the bay and only looked at B.I.N listings, and wow! And yet some are actually pretty reasonable. Some are insane. Glad to have my collection of these knives, love them all, even the ugly ducklings. ;)

On one hand, I think it just goes to show how much folks appreciate an old school hand crafted knife, and the limited ability to produce said product is a driving factor in where the secondary market is driven, that and the lack of competition. seriously, what other company offers similar offerings in terms of quality and materials and an eye to traditional aesthetics?

I thought the same thing after an initial small run of 1100 or so in '15 there seemed to be a good demand. So GEC allowed an open order from dealers and produced around 4000 in 2016 - probably the largest production to that date. The market was saturated for a long time. But as soon as the last few left dealer shelves the craze started bubbling again. Now they are silly kinds of money again. So, I guess if they do it again - get them while they are available, because someone else will be making the same comment a couple years later.

Remember the anticipated high demand for the #97?

I get that some folks are interested in a huge pocket knife, but I just don’t see huge numbers of folks scrambling to add one to their carts. Medium sized knives just make sense.

but the resulting weak pull and odd double pulls. i wish theyd do a medium coke bottle

I think the weak pulls was for historical accuracy. Not sure about the double pulls, except that I’ve seen them before in Schatt und Morgan runs.

That was the my opinion when the #97 was being released. I was in the minority about that...

Whoa, hey, let's not be hasty. Also, can we kinda keep mentions of the #97 down a bit? I still need to get my hands on an Ebony (and probably the micarta, who am I kidding), and I don't want demand to suddenly skyrocket! LOL

Youll be fine :D all retailers still have them. It's like the 06 templar in acrylic, couldnt give those away

Absolutely correct! I am going to make a move on the Ebony at the end of the week, and I'm hoping to get one with as few stratiations of lighter color as possible. The #97 should be absolutely stunning in person in some good Ebony!

It was one of those where you can sit and simmer and wait. the single pull is still up for consideration. but it is definitely not one of those you buy first and ask questions later gecs.

Ive had some other large coke bottles from S&M. Those were not light pulls. One was even a lock back.
