Lets talk GEC!

Anybody have an info on this knife to be made? New one?

Northfield - Templar - barn hinge bolsters - clip blade
#63 Northfield Templar Mardi Gras Acrylic
#63 Northfield Templar Sea Foam Acrylic
#63 Northfield Templar Krypotnite Acrylic

from page 91 or 92...

Looks like they're confused if it's a #63 or #36

I suspect that the barn door hinges refer to previous templar offerings;

there was a few 48s that also had these... maybe Trand will help us out with pics...

Sure thing Paul :) A couple of things to note with Templars of the past (#12s and #48s) is that
1. The handles aren't rounded off. The cover material is pretty much cut to the pattern shape but they're square, not rounded off like non templars of the same pattern.
2. They're very similar to shadow knives except that they have that barn door hinge that the pivot pin and first cover pin go through. As well as the end pin and last cover pin. If it didn't have those hinges, or it was much smaller and just around the pivot, then they would definitely be shadow knives.

What would a wharncliffe look like on a 54 pattern? Perhaps something like the next forest jack run. Look at the gec site with some imagination of how the 54 parts picture pages go together.

If I had to guess (Which I am) I'd say the 54 is a Presidential, and the 44 is probably a the Madison Barlow.

I emailed KSF a while ago when I saw they had an SFO for some 99's and Tyler said they have IRJs in the pipeline, along with more Fremonts and Madison Barlows.

More Fremonts you say :). I am hoping this run will have some ebony or blackwood like we were teased with so long ago....

Riddle me this.....

Why does the UN-X-LD shield generally only show up on bone or stag covers? I do have a couple of exceptions, but it seems to be the general rule..... for instance, my rosewood 92 has the cloud shield, but my moss green jigged bone 92 has the UN-X-LD shield..... so on and so forth.

Because GEC!

I've wondered too myself, but I like the plain shields and am glad they all don't come with the un x ld shields.

Shields with printing on them are a rare event on smooth covers. Chris at GEC tells me that the smooth cover knives, such as wood or acrylic, are buffed to the point that it would damage or wear down the printing. So smooth covers generally get plain or bare shields.

This being GEC, we can point to numerous exceptions to this rule, like my Tidioute with smooth Micarta covers.

But I suspect we will have to get lucky, or just beg, for the UN-X-LD shield to be put on a wood covered knife...

for the #48 SFO Waynorth insisted on the diamond un-X-ld shield with blackwood covers, and they had to develop a new technique to make it work, so in principle they should be able to add un-X-ld shields to wood without the overbuffing problems.

And with the "new technique" they developed I'm sure came a "new price point". Maybe acceptable on an SFO, but maybe not on general production runs.

The micarta above pre-dated their general move to use plain shields on smooth slab knives; as all early models were stamped shields. And if SFO contractors want to pay the extra to install a stamped shield on a smooth knife it is not a problem. But, as a general rule, GEC has moved to smooth shields on smooth slabs to eliminate some of the costing in an attempt to keep customer costs reasonable.

you're thinking of the #15 HJs and Diamond Radios. The DJs all had jigged bone covers.

OK. I've just attained a new level of knife geekiness. I actually find the talk about shields to be fascinating. Don't tell my wife about this. Sometimes, she actually thinks I'm a normal guy.
