Lets talk GEC!

I'm happy that everyone is stoked about the new TCs, but man, am I the only one a bit underwhelmed?

It's a cool barlow, don't get me wrong, but you can just buy a single spear 15 over at CK right now if you really want to try the pattern.

I was really hoping the next TC would be a 2 blader, we haven't seen those in forever.
I know I like 15s and I know I like spears, so it looks pretty good to me. The sawcut bone is a nice bonus. To me it’s a very different knife from the bail and chains still available. As far as one blade vs two, I don’t really have a preference. I can appreciate both. I could also see how you might be disappointed if you were hoping for something different.

For me, the addition of an extra blade to the 15 makes it a much more substantial pocket knife. Little bit easier to get a good grip on.

But I'm not disappointed, really. I have accumulated a very nice bunch of GECs but the shine has gone off the penny for me. As so many others here have lamented, the hassle of getting some of the patterns has sucked a lot of the fun out of it. Frankly, my collection was starting to grow beyond my ability to effectively enjoy it. Lots of maintenance on these carbon steel blades, storage, tubes, etc.

But I tried for the NW IRJs recently, so I can still get sucked in for the right knife. I loved the 62 run last year, I finally got the perfect pocket whittling knife (pocket carver) and I got every variation I could get my hands on.

I'm very glad we're getting at least one more TC run, and I feel sure that SFOs will return in the future.

I was able to get my name in the hat when I got the CK alert and will be pleased if selected. But I have to say my bank account is pleased that I won't be chasing any of the 15's. I already have a major knife purchase lined up for this month and will need time to recoup in case there are any Abilene's coming this year.

I can relate to that. I don't have a huge collection, but sometimes I feel like I have so many great knives that I can't use as much as I'd like. For that reason I'm trying to buy fewer; and a knife needs to be special for me to buy it. I only bought two knives last year - a Beer and Sausage and the Forum Knife. For me, this potential last run of TC barlows is special, so I'll try to get one. If it works out, I'm excited. If it doesn't, I try not to be too disappointed and tell myself it's just a knife.

I’ve definitely been enjoying my GECs that I have more since I haven’t accumulated another. I toss one in the pocket for days on end and it only sees a strop if it gets a little dull, which is different than how I normally do things.

I always trick myself into thinking that the differences between blade styles and patterns offer practical benefits. While it’s true that there might be some benefit, in use it’s practically nothing.

Im probably not done buying GECs; that Bill always has something that gives me a bad case of the “wants”... but I think I’m going to be okay in this new world of seemingly constant scramble and generally higher prices (CK and DLT excepted!).

Forgive this question. Is the TC Barlow exclusive to CK or will other dealers have them as well? I am thinking not based on the numbers. I recall Charlie manning the table at a Rendezvous a few years back selling them but silly me I did not take the opportunity. I was too much of a newbie I guess.

There is a list of Dealers that will have them on @waynorth's website. They are being claimed quickly though and I think two dealers are already sold out.

edit: make that three

Just got a notification that they were available at Knives Ship Free, and I got there just in time to see them in stock before clicking the add to cart button right when they sold out. Fun!
Same. I had the computer in front of me and got the email. Still didn't make it in time.

Yeah, they didn't last 30 seconds from when I got the email. Straight to the site, add to cart, no inventory! Oh well, I had only lukewarm excitement for this knife, and KSF was the one chance I knew I would have. Now that those are gone, I go back to enjoying my regular scheduled collection.

Bought this fella when GEC first started crankin' them out. It's the only one I own. The etching on the back of the master blade is all but gone but you can still make out 1 of 50.
