Lets talk GEC!

Case slaps a “Father” etch on the bone and says “voila, Father’s Day knife”, or color it pink and stamp “Mother” on there... because you know how females only associate with pink things . GEC has never once given me pause to think they’d do such a hack job.

It’d never be what Case does anyway, because Case makes a million essentially identical trappers. I think GEC could pull it off, and I’d bet they’d do very well. I mean... watch those urban jacks fly off the shelves...

Imagine every pattern that comes out has 50-100 set aside for some classy state-based trim. It’d take a decade, but I’d bet it’d be a decade of buzz.

I don't disagree with any of this. I certainly don't see GEC becoming Case but there is always that pessimistic streak in me.

On the topic of state knives, GEC's run of #43s was called the Oregon Trapper and even had a couple sporting the Beaver shield (standard run and one for the OKCA) - the beaver being our state animal and is featured on our flag. I had a moment of weakness and traded my 43 away awhile back - one of the few transactions I truly regret.

Great point...and how classy were those Oregon trappers? So classy.
I don't always like the decisions Mr. Howard makes, but one thing is for certain- I never feel like he wakes up on a Monday morning and throws darts at a "wheel of knife decisions". There's a little bit of art in what he makes.

those #43's were sweet, I'm sorry to hear that.

When the 43s initially came out, I did not appreciate them like I would now. I only got one - I thought it had a weak pull, an anemic snap, and it suffered from a bit of blade rap. However, for being a larger knife, it was lightweight, had a nice full blade and carried very well.

Given the opportunity to get another, I would appreciate it far more, I think - given the experiences I've had since.

Not to make this the Dylan & Dan show in here, but out of curiosity, how would you compare it to a 23?

Hard to compare without having a 43 in hand so I will have to go off memory. The 23 is a much beefier knife - it's a little longer and even the single blade version feels a lot bulkier in hand, likely due to the liner lock. The pull is much stouter on the 23 and its action/snap is considerably more assertive than the 43.

The 43 is lighter, slimmer, and felt less robust. None of those traits describe the 23 very well.

I wish I’d have picked up more than one. In particular, I regret passing on the natural canvas Micarta. The only complaint I had about my #43 was a bit of blade rap, but that’s nothing a couple sharpenings won’t take care of (in the meantime, I’ve got a small piece of leather down in the blade well that stops it from hitting the spring).

Nice one!
Same here. I picked up the Micarta but sure wish I would have grabbed a Beaver Tail as well! A fine knife that seems like a slightly larger version of my beloved 74.
Here's my Micarta 43 next to a NW Madison Barlow

Hey all! Been following the feed and really enjoying the content. Seems like a real stand up crowd of folks in here. I’m new to GEC so please excuse the arrogance. I’ve never owned a GEC but I have fallen in love with the TC and 77 patterns. But they are literally impossible to find. I feel like I need to give my kidney for a chance at one haha
