Lets talk GEC!

Comb Over....

Yes, I would take the snow any day of the week.... Which is good, because we are supposed to get a good amount three days next week. Also, that's a heck of a group shot even if you never got another GEC since 2015!

Thanks! I have picked up one or two since then , but yeah, I feel like I got into GEC at a good time. They were making some excellent knives around mid-2015, and there was still some great stuff just sitting on dealers shelves. That #15 Farm Boy was made in 2013 and I bought it new from a dealer in October 2015, and I think the #77 Harness Jack was made earlier in 2015 and still available in the fall.

I was even a little late to the party on the Beer Scouts, and was able to get ahold of a couple for myself and a couple to give as gifts (all purchased on the exchange, very reasonable prices).

That means we can finally get to the 85s.

Obviously you haven’t heard about the other surprise #15, the Cheese Scout. Three “blades” on three springs: an unsharpened cheese spreader blade, combo-fork-caplifter (like on the Beer & Sausage) and a mouse-trap-setting tool (think SAK utility hook). Swiss Cheese Jigged Bone, Cheese Wedge shield, “It’s a Gouda Knife!” blade etch.

That green looks awesome. I received an o d green today. I have to admit, I like it! The comb has a nice half stop and quite a bit of tension. I like the thickness of the knife having two "blades" sorta. Definitely different with the comb, but I'm sure others will like it also. Then of course there are the haters. Lol. A little variety to spice things up. Shouldn't have said that, now there will be all kinds of comments about the 85's having a pepper grinder blade.

I totally support the comb knives and I am happy for all of those that will get one and enjoy it, it's just not for me.;) For the life of me I can't understand getting so upset with a 2 week run of knives to leave for 6 months or more, but I support that choice too.

I am hoping for an 85, with no EO notch and a coping secondary - that would be pretty perfect.
Yes sir, put a hounds tooth shield on my micarta and you would have a special knife.

That would be an interesting gimmick for GEC to pursue, ala the state quarters. I can think of some really interesting pieces that might come from that sort of a project.

scratching my head and can only think of the famous Bridgeport Machines, once made in Bridgeport Connecticut that would fit well in the a corner of the GEC shop mounted on a pedestal for posterity

This has my interest. I was born in Bridgeport. The original “Northfield” knives were from Northfield, CT.

well I guess I could think of Mark Twain (of Hartford) and his adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn- the famous barlow being mentioned his books. Harriet Beecher Stowe lived in Hartford, too. Aside from that there was the circus fire, which was pretty famous. PT Barnum lived here as well. Lyme disease being named after Lyme, CT... uhm... We make submarines and jet engines... I’m sure there’s more stuff, but nothing that leaps to mind.

Now that I think about it, a GEC “state’s knife” collection could be awesome.

Agreed. Personally, I had to take a mental step back - I was letting myself get fired up over things I have absolutely no control over. I have many GECs, I will enjoy them - I am sure I will be acquiring more GECs, I will enjoy them too.

I could certainly get behind a Hounds Tooth shield - as much as I enjoy the Badge shield, I am hoping we aren't going to be seeing that again on the Micarta this go around. It seems to have become the common choice.

The one thing that I hope GEC avoids is what Case does on a much broader scale - make garish themed collections that really only appeal to collectors who will never use the knives. A states collection could be neat but I have a hard time believing it would appeal to anyone outside the most committed of collectors.

Personally, I'd only be interested in a small handful of states that are meaningful to me (i.e. birth state, state of residence, etc.)

Will GEC ever do another scratted bone (or scratted wood) like they did on those ancient TCs? It is so cool, it doesn't seem like it would be that complicated (maybe I'm wrong?) and it has only occurred (as far as I know) on that one knife.

They didn't use that name, but they did a scratted bone back in 2007 on both the #53 Stockman and the #73 Scout.
They called it chocolate jigged bone. (3rd from the left)
