Lets talk GEC!

You could have said no when she proposed.;) Don't project your knife issues on others.:D

I'd have been just as crazy to not have married her as I am crazy to keep buying knives after I married her. :p
She has even helped me get two of my 12 GECs, so I'm pretty lucky.

But all seriousness aside, I think the real marvel of BF is how we random strangers have remarkably similar experiences thanks to our appreciation of edged tools.
I'm guessing the wifely threat of violence at GEC purchases is a fairly common phenomena.
I've mentioned it somewhere before, but her most memorable threat to date is, "I'm going to take all your knives and grind the edges into the driveway before I stab you with them".

She also never touches the GEC's in my wooden GEC box, and doesn't touch the Case knives in the Case tray next to the Wooden GEC box... instead she goes for the RR's laying on the night stand next to the Case tray. I think deep down she gets it.

I mean GEC has done a big plain shield shield before o_O

This has been posted elsewhere, but thought it should be in the GEC thread as well.

INALLY!!
With the most gracious help of Mike Latham (knifeswapper), this week I added the last two pieces to my GEC #53 Cuban Stockman collection. Thirteen years it took me to gather up one each of the 53 different handle variations, many of which were only made in single digits. The knives are displayed from top down and then by columns, in the same order as they are listed in the GEC production totals.

Thank you again, Mike, you've made me very happy to achieve such a long-term goal.

Holy smokes!!! What a beautiful collection! Wow!

Congrats on completing the set. :) So what's next? :P

In most things I tend to agree with you, but not this one ;)

it's a question of aesthetics, the 23 is a type of broad swell end pattern so the 'plain' Crest shield sits well (enough..) but the 38 is a long tapered pattern and that 'Gravestone' thing just looks flat and ugly @Spydergirl88 got it right :D An exercise in ugliness.

GEC left the shields off Stag and I tend to think they should have left that thing off what is super jigged bone. But they'll sell out before they even get to the Post Office so that's alright ;)

But it sounds like they're doing something to the shield, so it won't stay like that. Thank goodness, because the rest of the knife looks great.
It's hard to imagine doing something to the shield, AFTER the knife is assembled!!??o_O
They stamped a shield for me, even before they welded the pin onto it.

I’m very excited about these upcoming 38’s. I think this is going to be what I wish the Case Seahorse Whittler had been. Don’t get me wrong- the Seahorse Whittler is a good knife, but the parallel spring configuration really crams the blades in there. I’m expecting a much better design here.

the 62 pocket carvers are the best parallel 2 springers I’ve seen. Go figure Bill Howard gets it right...

I always think of it as the cost of two knives. A TC barlow on the secondary market is worth about the price of two less sought after models.

So, if you are a collector, decide whether you want 1 special knife or two less special knives.

Thinking about it this way has helped me with deciding what to purchase.

Seeing some of the retail prices on the new Whittler...
At these prices, GEC knives are fast becoming collector pieces and not necessarily users any more.
Maybe they've always been that way and the market is just catching up.

there’s a pretty big spread between dealers pricing. The big names are still relatively the same price they’ve been the last few years, seems like a bunch of the smaller retailers are 25-50% more expensive.
