Lets talk GEC!

Draggat, the blade on the far left is NOT a Hawkbill. It is a Sheepsfoot. A Hawkbill is a much bigger blade with a recurve edge and a sharp point.

I feel like that's a hawkbill... A sheepfoot pretty much has to have a straight edge, unless I'm very mistaken.

I don't know. From what I do know of the historical pattern and what I know of Bill's love of these old patterns, I would assume that to be the case. Although assuming anything with GEC is a leap of Faith! :)

Agreed! The blade is stamped as a Sheepfoot but it does have an inward curve. I guess it really could go either way. I suppose it could be called a Modified Sheepfoot too. At any rate, it sure is a beauty!

If you look at the Loomfixer blade on the 56 and then look at the Sheepsfoot on the 15 Boys Knife, they have a very different blade profile at the blade spine and especially the top front where it curves down. And a lot of GEC blade blanks are not stamped but cut by waterjet.

Oops! I meant to say the blade tang is stamped as a sheepfoot. Thanks for the info on the water jet cutting. I thought they stamped them. Someday hopefully I'll visit the factory.

Too true! Lol

I hope they stick to the pattern proper. Lyle will be gearing up for them I'm sure :)

The blade does carry the same number as the Sheepsfoot. There are only so many numbers available, hence the one armed opener blade has a letter designation. And not all the blades are cut, some are stamped. And I have no idea what makes the determination. I'm guessing some blade shapes are more amenable to stamping cleanly with little or no loss.

Here are some examples of a Hawkbill blade:

From this pic of the blade closed you can see why a secondary blade would be difficult to use.
Knife manufacturers have a long history of mis-naming blades. I think correct nomenclature is important so that we all know what each other is speaking of. Most knife reference books have a page showing every know blade profile with the correct name. If you are looking for just one best reference book that covers Traditional folding knives "Levine's Guide to Knives and their Values" 4th ed. is by far the best and most authoritative.

Was just able to snag a real beauty tonight. Dang I wish I knew how to post pics.

see the two nail nicks on the maroon micarta big jack? so far the 54 big jack is the only 2+ blade slippie i have whose blades open clockwise on the same side. for the case peanut shown, its small size (and the fact that my den where i play with my knives is in semi-darkness) sometimes causes me to rotate the knife too often, and open the pen blade clockwise instead of counter. even my 23 pioneer confuses me at times because one blade opens clock while the other counter.

and that's why the 54 big jack is my fav at the moment.

I've got a couple of those. I always considered them to be in the Hawkbill family. Maybe the black sheepfoot of the family.

I'm gonna appogize up front as I'm sure I just missed it, but after a quick search I couldn't find it.

Which 15s are in this run? I know both boys and TC.... But curious on which blades and handles.

Any help or places I could look for the info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jim

Single sheep and sheep/pen for the boy's knives, I can't remember what the TC were but I'm sure someone around here does. :)

TC covers are Tan, Antique Yellow, and Santo Palto.

Boys covers are Antique Yellow, Red Rust, Gabon Ebony, and Nifebrite
