Lets talk GEC!

I have to be honest, I was disappointed with the action on my Pony Jack. I don’t mind the cam tangs but I enjoy a satisfying “pop” into both open and closed positions with my blades. My Pony just doesn’t have it.
Have you flushed out the works with some oil? Mine was kinda slow and gritty, but now it snaps nicely.
Pony has a small pin crack in the scale but has beautiful grain structure and Joan Mae informed me it has been stabilized.
Interesting. I noticed a shiny spot on mine near the center pin, that looks like a smear of superglue. Under magnification, I can see a line that looks more like part of the grain than a crack. Maybe they just hit it with a little glue for stabilization just in case. I don't mind it and am curious to see if it scuffs off from pocket wear.

That's a beautiful knife. 🤠
Thank you John!
So you can just pop in and they will sell you stuff?

Edit stupid question when it says Practical Knives on the blade does it mean its stainless?
Yep, there is a store in the factory where they have quite a few fixed blades and a limited number of various slipjoints. I tend to look for the "store model" knives because they are sold at a slight discount, and many times it's either nearly impossible to find the flaw, or it's something very insignificant.
As for the blade etch, not a stupid question at all. It's simply a blade etch I believe is often used on their fixed blades. And although it has the acorn shield, it is 1095 carbon steel

I also noticed a small spot in the grain of my example, I'm willing to bet it got the same treatment as the pin crack, be it superglue or an epoxy of sorts.

yup, there are some times they even have some gems in there. they do put things away before the rendezvous but things come back out during, and after. usually the store counters will reflect current and last few runs, fixed blades, some antler chews for the dogs, paper weight, beer glasses, books, illuminator and other gec goodies like hats, pins and shirts.

There was a single blade 23 in micarta with the 2021 rendezvous etch that caught my eye, if I didn't already have a couple 23s it would have come home with me. It's always so hard to decide, and easy to second guess your choices on the ride home!

tell me about it! i remember during the rendezvous Patty thought I wanted the crown lifter in dead skunk acrylic when I was pointing at the single blade rendezvous special, and i really fell for the 85 pattern after I drove away. Did eventually end up with a few and the mod of course.

dont sell yourself short, the rendezvous is sometimes an international affair! members far and wide have made the trip! One of my favorite rendezvous had a whole bunch of folks from the forums from all over. Campbellclanman Campbellclanman from NZ even joined up with paulhilborn paulhilborn before journeying over among a few others.

They have a retail space inside and sell knives based on availability, usually stainless has an acorn shield and cyclops ironworks stamp.

I'm in England and I want to do 'The Pilgrimage' some time. I've a sister in PA (other side though) to visit, and I'm told there's some decent fly fishing in the vicinity too, so it'll just be a question of hiring a vehicle and finding a local motel or similar.

I live in the US. Last time I checked I would need a plane, a rental car, a horse or something lol. Its been a few years since I checked. If I recall correctly, the airport was a ways away from GEC.

thats right, Titusville is a small town thats quite some ways away from major air ports. One option is fly into Erie. Ive heard they do have some air fields around there, but it ended up being more convenient to drive for me than to explore that option.

I haven't been around much lately, getting ready for winter and all that entails, I took a little break from posting. This past week my work schedule allowed me a quick trip down to Titusville and picked up a couple nice wood handled GECs. An H73116 and a store model pony. Pony has a small pin crack in the scale but has beautiful grain structure and Joan Mae informed me it has been stabilized. The H73 is great and also has some beautiful bocote slabs.View attachment 1681566View attachment 1681568View attachment 1681567
It's the perfect size to carry and can perform so many different tasks. Nice catch.

Some of you regular GEC Rendezvous attendees may have seen this pair of bark ivory 13's before. I was able to acquire them a few years ago and I love them more every time I look at them. It is my intention that these stay in the family for many decades after my passing.
cbr1000 up for adoption, he is potty trained and is a good listener. He also likes 13's 😁 😁

As Mr Knife mentioned, Erie International Airport is a good place to fly into if connections and pricing are suitable..... Erie is roughly 1/2 the distance to Titusville versus Pittsburgh to Titusville.....
