Lets talk GEC!

I heard from a guy that heard from a guy that heard from a guy… someone saw a few blades I guess at the rendezvous. Whether they were test blades, sfo blades, just for fun blades, or production run after the 65’s I know not. I’d expect after they announce the white bone 65’s and ship the fish knife they’ll announce the next pattern.
White bone 65's? Did I missed something?

I’m not at liberty of sharing photos because those that are posted on FB are not mine. They were being assembled the days after the rendezvous was over. If you’re in the slip joint exchange, with a little digging you can find them easy. White bone, corset shield, looks like NF.

Any word on what's coming out after the 65s? It sounds like we'll see 1 more version of the 65 but haven't heard much after that. GEC seems to be enjoying keeping us in the dark these days.

While I love the 14 & 49 and they’ll remain in the regular rotation it’s really nice to get back to a near perfect F&F GEC. This 88 is on par with my first GEC (the 86) and is near flawless. Nice strong pulls as well. This is why I’m willing to pay what I do, albeit a bit reluctantly at times, for GEC. Beautiful cutlery!

Tons of pocket time will be an understatement for this new arrival…

IMO - the #88 will be among the top 3 GEC produced knives for '22 - great knife, nice pic!

I haven't heard about any flaws on recent 14s. Maybe I missed something?

Mine had pretty bad side to side play, major gaps, and the etch wasn’t that good. However, I don’t care about the etch because I use it, and it’s such a small knife that the play doesn’t affect the function. The gaps are the one thing I could certainly do without but that’s personal preference and also does not affect functionality.

My 49 was basically the same but the etch was nice and clear - again not like that last bothered me anyway.

This 88, and from what I hear most of the run, are “back to normal” in terms of Pull, F&F and overall GEC level quality.

Quality is a tough thing to comment on when the manufacturer doesn't divulge their standards....
For example, try getting Case to define their blade centering tolerances.... If you're successful, send me a bill for a moderately priced steak and I'll mail you a check....
I recently bought a "Mint" Queen built Robeson from a girl who sells knives.... When I got it the blade wobbled like a duck's ass.... When I complained to her she said "That is the way they were built"...
So anyway, I've never seen any manufacturer state their tolerance ranges, nor their visual standards..... So maybe it's fine by them but not by you?...... Just a thought.....

I would presume it depends on the audience as well. For myself, I use all my knives, and noted that the blade play on these particular ones don’t affect function (however it could on other frames for users).

If you’re purely a collector, I don’t think any of the aforementioned ‘issues’ matter if they are generally not noticeable.

I agree with JohnDF JohnDF , a lot is preference and may not be a ‘flaw’ across the board.

However it is something to note that cost, in my perspective, should play a role to some degree.

- An inexperienced opinion

“Wobbled like a ducks ass…” 🤣

I think one of the misconceptions is that GEC is a jewelry maker.... They are in fact a tool maker that makes a very nice product.... I'd offer that if someone went to Lowe's or Home Depot to buy a knife, the only thing that would be looked at is how sharp it is..... Very seldom does anyone on here even mention sharpness as a requisite even when sharpness is a knifes primary requirement....

Obviously the celebrity knife makers spend a lot of time making a tool that is to a level of being jewelry..... And their followers eagerly pay for that level of attention..... I think it's wonderful when I can buy a GEC tool and sometimes have it look like a piece of jewelry....

Follow a Duck and you'll see the meaning🙂
