Lets talk GEC!

What's the chances GEC comes out with another fixed blade knife? I feel like I have heard people say they are not as popular but I'm pretty impressed with what I have seen them make in the past. I'm pretty new to GEC and traditionals in the first place, but I'm always on the lookout for a nice new bird and trout knife for hunting and fishing....

I'd bet theyll have some more fixed blades in the future. Seems like they do 1 or 2 a year.

Do these sell out as quickly as the folders usually do or did I interpret something incorrectly? I could have sworn I have heard that the fixed blades longer on the shelves like the Keychain knives do now.

They certainly sell slower than the folders. I dont pay too much attention to them, but when they come out they generally dont disappear in a second. You might be able to score one secondary for retail I would guess, the market isnt too hot for them from what ive seen.

I really miss the days when GEC was better at keeping their website updated - it isn't really all that fun anymore to check in on these days. In the past, GEC (whoever was in charge of marketing and such) did a great job of balancing informative updates with teasing us all with what could be next on the bench. I know the pandemic has changed a lot of things (i.e. staffing, processes, etc.) but I have to wonder - is it a conscious marketing decision to let us know what they are making, only when they are practically being shipped? Or is it simply due to a desire to keep their annual roadmap more fluid due to any number of factors?

I have to say there's some truth to what you say Dylan Pàdruig Pàdruig . When Chris was there, it seems there was more interaction between GEC and the customers. Little things were helpful to that end too such as the Certificates of Authenticity and other things like the Cigar Bands around the wrappers on the #53 Cuban Cigar Stockmans. Yes they do include buttons with some of their knives but it's not the same to me. Perhaps part of it is that the newness of GEC is wearing off and for GEC now, it's just get the knives made and out the door. Anyway, the're great knives overall and worth picking up when possible.

Modoc ED Modoc ED and Pàdruig Pàdruig , I had a few dealings with Chris years ago. She was special, no doubt. I hope she is well and wish someone could give us an update on her. I also have the feeling that she was the one behind the many photographs, production updates, and other goodies that kept the excitement level high. I have stated several times in the Forum how much I miss her.

However, Joan Mae is also kind and pleasant. She has been helpful whenever I had an issue. (She is also extremely clever in creating the Down the Hall graphics.) However, there are big differences between now and Chris’ era. GEC produces far larger numbers of a single pattern with far fewer variations these days. There just is not as much to tease us with. Plus, the long passage of time between these large runs makes it pretty much impossible for GEC to keep the excitement level high. I agree that a bit more heads up about future production would be helpful once they are certain about what is in the pipeline. (I do get the impression that Bill Howard often changes his mind or makes alterations to his plans. The pandemic also derailed some of his plans. This probably makes it difficult for Joan Mae to post early information about what is in line for production. Can you imagine the uproar on the Forum if they announced they were going to make A and then decided to make B?)

Larger numbers and less varieties make it much easier to get a knife today, but they cost a heck of a lot more now that the majority of dealers are raising their prices. The aftermarket prices are not much higher than what dealers are charging, and in some cases they are even less than what certain dealers charge. The end result of these changes is that it is fairly easy to get a knife now, but the cost is much higher. I liked it better before.

The red and black combo is for you Dylan.

I like GEC's and have several; all get used. I tend to go for the smaller ones in jigged Bone and don't even bother to try to get most styles or variations. That said if they would make another run of 09's at a decent price I would be right in the fray trying to snatch up another one or two.

Based on an association with the term “Johnny on the Spot” that PointyThings PointyThings pointed out earlier in the thread (which had occurred to me as well when the name was first announced), I went ahead and put together a mock-up for what the special leather slip could look like. This is, of course, just a rough mock-up. I imagine they would cut the leather more to match the shape of the design, and the design would be stamped into the leather (unfortunately, making it look that way in the mock-up is beyond my abilities).

Personally, I think this would be the #1 coolest pocket slip design GEC has done. Maybe #2.

Very cool slip! But some how the act of micturition and a lightning bolt logo worries me. 🤷😜

Now we know what will be on the porta potty at next year's rendezvous!

Made a small mod in Photoshop to make the design stamped.

Nice! 😁 At some point I should probably purchase and actually learn how to use Photoshop. I just mess around with this stuff in a free iPhone app that I downloaded several years ago.
