Lets talk GEC!

I really miss the days when GEC was better at keeping their website updated - it isn't really all that fun anymore to check in on these days. In the past, GEC (whoever was in charge of marketing and such) did a great job of balancing informative updates with teasing us all with what could be next on the bench. I know the pandemic has changed a lot of things (i.e. staffing, processes, etc.) but I have to wonder - is it a conscious marketing decision to let us know what they are making, only when they are practically being shipped? Or is it simply due to a desire to keep their annual roadmap more fluid due to any number of factors?

yep, it was more fun pre pandemic - lots popping and always much to talk about - but the hits keep coming

it’s a nice fit for driver bits. I’d use it for light tasks this way. Would also work on 1/4” nuts/bolts.

That’s not completely un-handy. That may be the only use I can think of for that. Now you have to carry a set of bits and a bit-holder.

I guess marketing efforts aren't as necessary when you consistently sell out your entire production in seconds.

I get that - but I'd argue that just because one has a hot product, it doesn't mean that a "they-sell-themselves!" sort of approach is going to be an infinite solution.

Plus, I don't get that "vibe" from them - I definitely think it correlates with when Chris left (like what Jiki Jiki said). They just haven't prioritized that element again, which is a shame - a lot of us enthusiasts enjoyed the engagement and the subsequent excitement it produced.

I think losing Chris has as much to do with it as anything.

I had the pleasure of meeting Chris a few years back when she was at the Oregon Knife Show - she is definitely missed.

If you look at the what's at the end of the hall pic, zoom in really close, the door knob cover plate to the store has a phillips head screw in it. Maybe some bits are going to be next? Maybe a couple loop holders on the special pocket slip they're working on. 🤪

That's a police movie style picture zooming!

Jokes aside, I'm pretty sure they are working on the Waynorth 35 and the Bunny (and it's "regular" versions, if any).

Personally I think it has to do with getting materials. They know what patterns they are making. But because inflation and shipping chain issues they don’t know what materials they will have for covers. I guess you could argue and say that they would have that set aside a month in advance as well. Who knows. I find it less exciting as well. The GEC tab will forever be open on my phone and be refreshed multiple times daily.

Alas, I missed 3 different drops, and it appears Johnny on the Spot has passed me by. But, I'm excited that it seems to have sold so well, which may mean they'll make more camp style 35s. I've waited this many years, I can wait more.

I'd just love it if someone lucky enough to have gotten one could use the can opener and report back, with photos. That would take some of the edge off, no pun intended.

I'm REALLY curious about the possibilty of a bit holder slip, that would be the bee's knees.

r8shell r8shell demonstrated its use here in the #35 thread. It looks like it works!

I agree. The “What’s Happening?” page turned into “What’s Happened”. I understand they don’t necessarily have to do it since everything sells out instantly regardless, but I do miss the updates. It’s probably better for them to focus on making knives instead of focusing efforts too much on the website though.
