Lets talk GEC!

Nice, I'm glad it worked.
Something I didn't mention: I stuffed bits of oil soaked tissue in the well, near the pivot. File a little, remove the tissue, test the blade pull, stuff new tissue in, repeat. Cuts down on the chance of metal filings getting into the works.

The knife in that picture is my #77 Harness Jack. I was mighty nervous about taking a file to it, but I really, really wanted to use the knife and be able to open the punch blade.

Have not seen the #77 Harness Jack before, what a great looking knife. I’m not sure any of my other knives would ever see any pocket time If I had one!

Is there a thread about knife picks/openers here? All I found is old buy/sell threads, and I was looking for a discussion and sharing type.

Yes, exactly. It doesn't affect the staying-open part of the spring. It just lessens the first part of opening, enough that I can get better leverage the rest of the way.

I've only done it a couple of times, but it took a nail breaker down to just a hard-ish pull. If I remember correctly, I've only done it to blades with half stops; I think the square tang makes it easier to know where to file. It's tricky, but doable using jeweler's needle files. Scratching the inside of the liner is inevitable, but it's a user and that part doesn't show anyway.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I tried it on the secondary blade of one of my 46 Whalers. These are known for have a difficult opening. I think I may have made a slight change. I’m going to give it another try soon.

I just bought a Great Eastern Knife, #863221 Tidioute, Angus and can't wait for it to come in , I am a fixed blade EDC now but i wanted to get something a little different . Has anyone found a place that makes a good front pocket sheath with a clip ? I know Delta Sheath makes some nice ones . Do these knive take a forced patina very good ?

The 86 uses 1095 carbon so it will patina fine.

I like these clipped slips from CK. Well made and a supporting dealer. I just tried one with an 86 and its a tight fit. It will work, but its really snug. Being leather it would probably stretch some over time. I've mostly carried slimmer single blades in it.

Love this, protects the knife and keeps it from going missing from my pocket!
