Lets talk GEC!

I, too, prefer shielded stag when inlet properly.

As beautiful as this stag is, to my eye it is missing something.

I also landed an H40 this week, India JB in my case and loving it.
Is there a kindly soul on here who can explain to this newbie to GEC Fixed Blades how their stamped numbers work or point me in the direction of that information?

Thank you JohnDF JohnDF - that explains the numbering breakdown.

Thank you stipe82 stipe82 - that clarifies the blade shapes.

I also found this: https://greateasterncutlery.net/blog/hunting-knife-guide/
And subsequently this: https://greateasterncutlery.net/blog/hunting-knives/

If I'm understanding those correctly, the H** designation would appear to specify the blade size only, while what I would recognise as the overall knife pattern would seem to appear mainly in full text, e.g. 'Canoe Pattern', 'Bird & Trout Pattern', 'Skinner Pattern' etc. But those generalities seem to have exceptions too. Additionally, it looks like the H knives often get released for sale years after the year stamped on the knife, far more so than the pocket knives.

The only other GEC Fixed Blade I have is one I acquired as part of a larger purchase, a H73116 Bird & Trout without sheath or tube, in what I'm fairly sure is OD Green Linen Micarta. If that's so, it could be my rarest GEC knife because I can only find mention of 9 pieces in this specification, released in August 2017 - unless anyone knows otherwise?

Took a couple new GECs on their first camping trip! Well, it was more like a car glamping trip because the nights were so cold I just slept in the back of my Jeep every night. Either way, I got some good user time with my H30 in Black Onyx Jigged Bone and my TC 14 prepping lots of food, cutting some cordage, digging out a few splinters, whittling a cooking spatula, breaking down beer boxes, cutting up my meals, split up some small kindling and lots of other little tasks.

Hope everyone had a killer weekend as well!

Phenomenal post!!

May I ask, is that chuckbox something you built or a product from somewhere? I like it a lot.

Thanks so much!

I built it from an old 762 ammo crate. I basically just made and put some oak dividers in it and attached them with wood glue and finishing nails. Oh and added some hinges and latches. I do quite a bit of camping with a couple different friend groups and I got so tired of ending every trip by having to round up all my camp cooking stuff I had strewn all over the campsite lol. So the chuck box helps me keep everything together, it's pretty easy to move the whole kit around wherever I need to, and everything goes back in its place when I'm done using it instead of just trying to find some random place to set them down when I'm not using them. Plus it stands up and the lid makes a nice little work area and a place I can set my rocket stove so it's also easy to set up right outside my tent under my tarp and be able to cook even if I'm hunkered down in the rain. Works great in the back of my Jeep too! Oh and maybe the best feature of having it all contained: I can just store it like that at home so when I'm ready to go camping I don't have to gather all that stuff up, I can just grab the whole box and go.

I KNOW I have better pictures of it somewhere but here is the only other one I can find at the moment, it at least shows the whole thing... set up on my little folding table right outside my tent from my last camp trip several months ago.
