Lets talk GEC!

I've been waiting patiently for GEC H20 glad to see its on the list and hope I get lucky to grab one.
I'm wanting an H20 drop point, I thought the drop point blades were H205 and not H208 is this a GEC error or my misunderstanding
Thanks

They were definitely H205 in the past and 5 is their specific designation for "drop point" so I'm assuming this is just a typo by the GEC person putting the info together.

Sign up for the e-mail notifications from as many vendors as you can. The fixed blades are definitely selling out way quicker than they used to but the last couple drops I participated in at least lasted a few minutes instead of a few seconds.

What makes a fixed blade a bird knife? I thought the previous GEC bird knives were folders with the bird hook?

Typically it's the blade shape, which is usually a narrow skinner type blade with a good belly.... often, but not limited to, a long clip point of some kind. Basically a slightly more robust filet knife.

Here is my H73110 "Bird & Trout"

Anybody else noticed this with # 23 and other large GEC trapper patterns?

Snapping the blades shut too fast gets your edge dented on the "hump" in the middle of the spring. Seems to be mainly a problem with the wide spey blade.

Some, like the Woodland Micarta have really strong snaps and its almost impossible to avoid this.

Blade rap, I get it on my 71s.

I mean its a user so I'm just going to Lansky down the edge maybe 0.002 or so at 20 or 25 degrees but its a bummer if you're just collecting these as fidget spinners. Which is what my cattle knife is (but doesnt have this problem)

I'm gonna be bummed if this happens to my baby bullet trapper.......I can tolerate scratches and honest patina, but not a dented edge. That shit will bother me endlessly like an itch in the middle of my back.

perhaps a little piece of leather in the blade well? i know my 92 and my 85s from the recent runs had a spot of blade rap. however that might have just been due to my over indulgent snapping of the blade. not a lot of my gecs have that issue tho.

GEC has definitely had patterns that suffer from blade rap. The ones I’ve experienced personally usually stop doing it after a couple sharpenings. Something I’ve done on a couple knives is place a small piece of leather down in the blade well that will stop the travel of the blade before it hits the spring. Other than that, best you can do it slowly walk ‘em closed rather than let ‘em snap.

The only 'Rapper' I had experience of was the first GEC Bladeforums Knife the 2011 85 with crown lifter. A sharpening or two helps, I put cork in the wells of my Laguioles which will rap if handled badly. You simply have to refrain from snappin' otherwise it will be rappin' - for a bit anyway.

i wonder if it is an issue of the 85 lines due to blade and spring geometry, however i suppose a little blade rap is better than an anemic spring tension

Finally scored a grail knife I've been on the hunt for for years! 61 Deluxe 2 Blade Congress. I just love the full overkill 4 big stamped bolsters and I think they picked the perfect model to do it on. To me this really does scream "deluxe."

That's the pattern that got me started with GEC. I think it's aesthetically the best looking. It took me a while to locate one, then two. Unfortunately it wasn't as useful as I'd hoped, so off it went. That doesn't change how exquisite yours is.
