Lets talk GEC!

So whats with these astronomical prices that Ebay sellers and online dealers charge for GEC knives?

Only a little research would tell you that these knives are bought, sold and traded on multiple knife forums at much lower prices.

Are people really paying $280 for a Cattle knife and $1399 for a "rare" model? I just commissioned a large 2 blade trapper with a known custom maker in ATS 34 with stag scales for $850. And its the only pocket knife I'll ever spend that kind of money on.

I mean, a GEC camp knife is a great pocket knife, but its not worth $400 lol

I know I know...to each his own.

there is unfortunately a small group of people who have turned gec knives into a personal knife selling business to the point it basically affected the entire market. however it is not a discussion for this section of the forum.

Discussing prices is a perk of having a Gold or higher Membership. His post is fine. I believe it was Frank knarfeng knarfeng that touched on discussing pricing in the forum the other day.

my answer still stands then. it is that group of bad eggs who decided to turn gec releases into a business and have thus resulted in the prices climbing.

Yes, most of your answer still stands. I was just mentioning that price discussion is not off limits to those with a Gold or higher membership.

It's also the people who keep them in business by purchasing their marked up wares. GEC makes a great knife, there are a few vendors who price them where I am happy to purchase them, some vendors not so much. As you pointed out the prices some are willing to pay is far beyond where I see value in them. Knives are a poor investment vehicle, if you are paying a markup in hopes you will ever recover that money or even hoping to make money in the future the odds are very much against you. See the Dutch and their lilies if you would like a historical example of this behavior and how it almost always ends up.

tulips, but yes, should be interesting to see what happens to the market once the recession rolls in

Use them all, factory appearance is boring. Enjoy them. That being said you do you.
Well, I personally like shiny. :D And I don't have instruments and machinery to polish like factory does. And I don't mean "save them untouched for future profit". Also, I tend to not to care much about those I use frequently. They kind of morph in my mind from an admirable thing to just a tool. But yes, suum cuique - to each his own.

GEC knives are Veblen goods, so increasing prices cause increased demand!
I personanlly don't think that's true. Already it's noticeable that people have slowed down due to increased dealer prices. Now there is an argument to be made that GEC items have morphed into "prestige goods" and have seen value increases because of that.

Maybe I'm remembering economics wrong, but I thought a Veblen good IS a "prestige good". The idea is the high price is actually part of the value the consumer gets from the good.

"A Veblen good is a superior good with a prestige value so high that a price decline might lower demand."
Exactly my understanding of it, but noting that prestige goods do not necessarily have to be Veblen goods. Kind of a square vs rectangles type thing.
Is anyone else having keyboard problems with the forum?
I saw the original post and was extremely confused for a bit.
