Lets talk GEC!

That's the pattern that got me started with GEC. I think it's aesthetically the best looking. It took me a while to locate one, then two. Unfortunately it wasn't as useful as I'd hoped, so off it went. That doesn't change how exquisite yours is.
Totally agree, I think it's one of their most striking. I think mine will be mostly a dedicated whittler and maybe some light edc. I really love the blade setup for whittling specifically. I tend to whittle with wharncliffes and coping blades 90% over clips or spears.

I’ve been avoiding buying a 61 on the secondary. I need to just do it. They’re sweet.
This is my first 61 but I'm definitely enjoying it so far. The question is which one are you going to get, the regular 2 blade, the Deluxe, or the full Congress? This version with the big bolsters has some extra heft to it but I like that and it probably doesn't weigh any more than the full Congress. I've also been eyeing the full Congress but have been able to tell myself I don't need it because I have a similar full Congress from Schatt & Morgan.

So....over in the Maintenance and Tinkering thread I posted a question about how thick the nickel plating on GEC bright polish bolsters is. For the purpose of sanding and polishing out minor scratches and dings.

Two people have now chimed in and said they are solid nickel bolsters. I just assumed they were plated brass or iron flashed with copper and then a heaier nickel plating because nickel is such a pain to machine.

Thoughts? What would a Cattle Knife or 23 pattern have? (I know some of the 23s are just satin finished carbon steel but I'm talking about the bright polish ones like the Northfields)

I’ve seen several mods where they engrave/add NF trim and cut into the bolsters. I’ve never seen any brass or iron exposed. I believe they are solid.

This is what they are..... I believe the "All Steel" GEC folders use stainless steel bolsters.....

The bolsters are solid...either nickel silver or stainless depending on the model.

Yeah I kind of get it now on the alloy...I forgot about CuNi alloy as an easily workable corrosion resistant decorative material though I should have realized it as it is common in flatware handles, lamps etc.

I don't carve gnomes. I carve elves. They work for Santa. I also carve Santa. I carve other things too, however people don't typically hang Frankenstein and Uncle Sam from their Christmas trees.

Oh, I see! 😅 I thought Santa's elves are green though. Jokes aside, amazing job man! And a paintjob is awesome!

So whats with these astronomical prices that Ebay sellers and online dealers charge for GEC knives?

Only a little research would tell you that these knives are bought, sold and traded on multiple knife forums at much lower prices.

Are people really paying $280 for a Cattle knife and $1399 for a "rare" model? I just commissioned a large 2 blade trapper with a known custom maker in ATS 34 with stag scales for $850. And its the only pocket knife I'll ever spend that kind of money on.

I mean, a GEC camp knife is a great pocket knife, but its not worth $400 lol

I know I know...to each his own.
