Lets talk GEC!

Use them all, factory appearance is boring. Enjoy them. That being said you do you.
Went to a blade show years back and bought a slip joint I liked that was used. I handed the guy back his pocket slip he kept the knife in. "You don't want it to keep it nice?" I politely him told him to keep it, pocket knives are for pockets.

Got a pat on my back and heard a voice say, "Good man, no one needs a Pocket Purse." I turned around and watched the legend Tony Bose give me a thumbs up and disappear in the crowd.

My opinion is worth two cents. I think you should buy, sell, and use whatever knife makes you happy.

Tony's opinion is worth stacks of gold. Using a little purse to hold your knife is the trend I believe to be the worst economic decision a man can make. Use that $30, $40, or $50 and buy higher qualty, or more knives and put them in your pocket.

If the market crashes for knives it means nothing to most of us. We like pocket knives for many different reasons. When I carry that Case/Bose collaboration, it's the story I remember. I couldn't remember what I paid for the knife that day if my life depended on it. I do wish I would have bought a custom from Tony himself. He did some great work for the knife community.

If a Gold or higher member needs to ask a question of valuation about a specific knife, that member is permitted to do that. That is a rule across the forums.

However, in the Traditional Forum we just talk about the knives. Not how to buy them. Not how outrageous some of the current prices are. Not how annoying the flippers are. We just talk about how gorgeous they are, the fine points of their construction, workmanship, & history, and how much we like to carry and use them.

Discussions of buying, selling, and outrageous prices belong in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Forum.

Your support is appreciated.

GEC makes decent knives that generally look good and work well, representing good value for money at around their suggested factory price. In the greater scheme of things even expensive GECs are cheaper than many items we regularly use daily.

Some have enough (if you are here, possibly hundreds) knives to not have the need or desire to use all of them.

I know many only want the 1095 steel, but the fact that their blade etchings disappear with use, taking away some of the look of the knife, makes me want more SS ones.

I am aware that older knives in 1095 (though for many of us older knives were SS knives, going back a few decades) had etchings too and they would also disappear with use, but nowadays with the effort that goes into the design of the etchings I wish that they still stayed on the blade with use. This makes some not use the knife, to keep the look.

SS is also easier to maintain, of course.

You can always use a pristine/new knife, but you cannot, easily, make a knife new again once used.

If you have to ask or think hard on whether you should use a knife then you have given yourself the answer to your question.

Enough "wisdom/ranting/talking rubbish" from me I think, for today, possibly 😄

Or use them to buy some leather and make your own "little purse" and feel the joy of creating. 😁

Also, for me bolster patina looks bad. And I honestly don't see it much on people's pictures, even of knives with heavily patinated blades bolsters are shiny. So I guess nobody likes bolster patina.

I usually only use a pocket slip “purse” if the knife will be in a pocket with other hard items like coins and keys, etc. If the knife is fairly valuable and has a high resale value, I may still use a slip with it in an otherwise empty pocket (such as my John Lloyd Mammoth Barlow). To each his own.

Bolsters are typically nickle silver on GECs it will not patina at the same rate as 1095. Some people wouldn't mind bolster patina, it's just difficult to achieve.

“Tony's opinion is worth stacks of gold.” Also what it takes for one of his custom made knives. But I’m sure they are worth it. If I’m ever able to afford one it will have its own pocket purse. 😃

agreed, although I live vicariously through folks like waynorth waynorth who has shown many fine examples and several other knife collectors who have owned both Tony and Reese's works.

Not everyone uses a “pocket purse” to make a knife stay pretty. I use a slip, mainly clip slip, sometimes to keep the knife easier to access and keep it from ending up sideways in my pocket. A knife sideways in the bottom of my pocket drives me crazy.

Here's Mr. Bose opinion and humor on pouches and slips (purses) and a waiver you must have to carry them. In just the first few minutes, you'll see he wisdom and humor on the subject.

If it helps any of you, Ariat Rebar M4 & M5 jeans have a built in knife pocket and deep 5th pocket. Keep your knife in its own pocket and upright. All GEC, Bose, Case, fit nicely. Every knife owner should have a pair.

if im in scrubs and i feel inclined to carry a traditional, its going in a slip with a clip generally. to each their own

This is carried quite often in a pocket with keys, small Leatherman, a second knife, a brass Fisher Space Pen, and a guitar pick. No slip because it's too much hassle when I need to use the knife. I like the patina I'm putting on the bolsters, the bone, and the blade. This knife's story started as part of the BF community, but now it's also got my story written on it, without in any way removing the first story.

Regarding slips: I own a few because I like leather items like that - they look cool. But they add so much hassle to pulling the knife out to cut something that I never use them anymore. I found that switching back to slipjoints after years of modern one-hand openers was completely unnoticeable as far as daily use goes, but adding a slip into the mix was significantly worse from a use perspective.

H20! Non-traditional midnight camo micarta. I wonder why such a choice?

Knife slips are fun and they allow a craftsman to show off their skills in a simple and satisfying way.

That said, I rarely use them as it's an extra step towards having to retrieve my knife. I have multiple pockets - one for a knife, one for my wallet, another for a beer koozie and a handkerchief, and the other for everything else (flashlight, pen, lighter, guitar picks, and change). Sometimes I will pocket carry a fixed blade in addition to a slipjoint - in those cases, I'll add a slip.
